IT Technician
Being a computer technician involves having knowledge of how to build a PC from scratch, develop troubleshooting techniques, perform testing and diagnostics, technical support and installations.
There are basically two types of technicians:
Internal technicians, work for a particular company, repairing and maintaining the company's computers and network.
Contracted technicians, work for different companies on a contractual basis and check all their hardware or technical requirements; they can install and repair PCs and provide technical support.
The tasks of computer technicians are complex and demanding. Technicians are responsible for the effective operation of a wide range of computer equipment that can vary from personal computers (PC), teleprocessing and network equipment, small systems, to large and complex mainframe computer systems.
They are responsible for carrying out high-quality repair and maintenance of the equipment they are in charge of. They need a thorough knowledge of electronics, both theoretical and practical, and of how to effectively use all available diagnostic instruments and techniques to minimize disruption to the customer and improve productivity. Computer technicians also need the software knowledge required for the type of equipment they maintain, i.e., DOS, Windows, Unix, Novell, etc.
The job requires computer technicians to stay up to date with the latest technological advances. Even after qualifying, they must regularly attend training courses to update their knowledge and skills. Since technology is always changing and improving, technicians' training will continue throughout their career.
Technicians are responsible for keeping customers satisfied. They must understand and be responsive to customers' needs and requirements. They must communicate effectively with customers regarding repairs carried out and keep them fully informed of any unresolved or outstanding issues. They also attend customer performance follow-up meetings and develop solutions to existing problems. They should strictly adhere to any commitments they have made, especially with customers.
Technicians work indoors in computer rooms and in customers' departments. They often need to travel between jobs or customers, although distances are usually short.
