Production directors are responsible for the planning, organization, coordination and control of production. They must strive to produce as much as possible at the lowest possible cost. Their activities include anticipating production, factory design, developing a production plan and quality standards.

Production managers are responsible for the effective management of organizations' production line to ensure that the highest production standards are maintained, at the lowest costs.
Job responsibilities include planning and organizing production schedules, assessing project and resource needs, estimating, negotiating and agreeing budgets and timelines with clients and managers, determining quality control standards, overseeing production processes, renegotiating timelines or schedules as needed, selecting, ordering and purchasing materials, organizing routine repair and maintenance of production equipment, liaising with buyers, marketing and sales staff and supervising the work of junior staff.

In larger companies there may be close links between production management and general or strategic management and marketing or finance functions.

Production managers may specialize in various management fields, such as personnel and financial management, work and study, training, quality control, marketing and distribution, administration and organization. The nature of the work depends on the type of institution they work for, as well as the individual's knowledge of chemical, metallurgical and other processes.

With regard to long-term planning, production managers help select and design the specifications of the services provided. They are involved in decisions regarding the layout of the company, the size and range of the product or service to be provided, the design and organization of work processes, work standards and employee compensation. Short-term planning includes making decisions about scheduling production activities and their execution.

Production managers work mostly with the production system, but also carry out inspections to ensure that their orders are executed correctly. All of these functions require production managers to work closely with the rest of the organization's management staff and stay in touch with production workers to avoid any potential production delays.
