Scholarships in Peru
Studying for a degree in Peru can be easier if you access one of the scholarships offered in the country.
The Higher Education System of Peru is one of the oldest in the Americas; in fact, the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is considered the oldest in the entire continent, because its founding dates back to the year 1551.
This fact marks, in some way, the traditionalist character that higher education has in the country.
With 141 universities, 218 Institutos Superiores Pedagógicos, 860 Institutos Superiores Tecnológicos, and 43 Institutos y Escuelas Superiores de Formación ArtÃstica, you will notice that the variety of study alternatives, at least as far as institutions are concerned, is remarkable.
Now, if you are wondering what funding options you have to pay for your studies, we will tell you that either you choose to cover the entire cost yourself and with your family, or you choose to enroll in one of the national scholarship programs offered in Peru.

National scholarship programs in Peru
Pronabec, that is the name by which the Peruvian Programa Nacional de Becas y Crédito Educativo is known. The program was created to contribute to social inclusion and equitable access to Higher Education.
The Pronabec is run by the Ministry of Education and operates through the management of the Oficina de Becas y Crédito Educativo (OBEC).
The Peruvian scholarship program is aimed mainly at students with high academic performance who are in a situation of poverty or extreme poverty and high vulnerability.
The government of Peru has signed a series of agreements to implement these Higher Education study scholarships, with the support of universities and Higher Institutes, as well as Municipalities, Ministries, and Regional Governments.
Following this line of action, the Pronabec was created and the different scholarship modalities included in the program were shaped. Among them we will highlight the following: Beca 18 ordinary modality, Beca 18 special modality, Beca Perú, Beca Presidente de la República, and international scholarships.
Beca 18 ordinary modality
This scholarship is probably the most general and inclusive in Peru. It is a scholarship in which numerous higher education institutions participate, including the most prominent in the country, such as the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú or the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, among others.
The program is intended for young Peruvians no older than 22 years of age, who are in a situation of poverty according to the assessment of the Sistema de Focalización de Hogares (SISFOH), who have completed secondary studies from 2010 onward, who attended Secondary Education in state institutions and have a minimum overall average of 15.00 at the secondary level, if they wish to gain admission to Universities, and an average of 13.00 to gain admission to Technological Higher Education Institutes.
It is also important that the student has been admitted to a university and degree program covered by the scholarship program, that is, with an agreement with Pronabec.
This scholarship covers the expenses the student will incur during the five years of university education, such as enrollment, fees, tuition, etc. In the case of technical institutes, the scholarship will be for three years.
Accommodation, local transportation, study materials, laptop and Internet service may be other complementary benefits to the scholarship.
Beca 18 Special Modality
