The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) was founded in 1971 with the integration of the Escuelas Técnicas Superiores that until then made up the Instituto Politécnico Superior. The following year the Escuelas Universitarias joined.
However, the origin of the institution goes back considerably further in time. The teachings of most of the Centers were introduced during the reign of Carlos III, in the 18th century, and for years, these Schools were practically the only ones in this country linked to the teachings of Architecture and also Engineering.
