A sales executive is responsible for developing and executing sales strategies to achieve company goals. This includes developing relationships with potential customers, analyzing their target market, developing sales materials, presenting products and services, gathering market information, tracking sales and developing marketing strategies.

The basic skills of a sales executive are selling and advertising. In order to sell effectively, one must possess both the art of persuading and the skills to convince others, these skills can be developed through formal, informal or even self-directed training.

Sales executives must also develop sales skills since an executive has to generate and oversee the sales of an entire team. If sales are not managed correctly, a company's productivity is seriously affected. In other words, sales figures are the lifeblood of any company. therefore every person in the company's sales department is expected to generate good sales numbers.

Some executives are tempted to see the increase in sales as the end result of what they do. However, they forget that without the right sales figures, the company cannot survive. All salespeople and sales managers must understand that if sales are not handled well, a company does not survive.

The sales executive must have a keen interest in sales processes and must have an eye for detail, as well as the fine art of selling through different channels. Good salespeople are able to attract and understand whether the client is receptive to a company's products and services. The best salespeople, and most successful sales people, are those who combine these two traits. One characteristic that makes the difference in successful sales executives is the ability to motivate their team.
