Dermatology is a specialty of medicine chosen by those professionals who are passionate about the skin that covers human beings.
The specialty in dermatology is a choice that any medicine graduate can make who is thinking about a specialization. Its objective is based on the observation, study and prevention of an organ that is considered the most extensive in the human being, the skin. At the same time, although many may not know it, knowledge about hair and nails, and their respective health disorders, is also learned. Regarding the degree itself, in some universities it can be taught as a specific postgraduate program and in other academic institutions it is offered as a specialization. In any case, the professional obtains the title of specialist in dermatology.
It is a degree that lasts three to four years, not counting the prior length of the medicine degree, which must be completed by all graduates who wish to enroll.
Some of the subjects that can be taught throughout the degree are based on the skin and its different peculiarities, the different problems it can present; the types of burns that can be observed. Some subjects also relate skin issues to other organs such as the eyes, endocrinological and gastric aspects; as well as subjects on degenerative diseases and others that have to do particularly with obstetric dermatology. On the other hand, others are specific to childhood and old age.
Dermatologists can work in private practices while also performing their duties in hospitals or clinics. Some professionals decide to dedicate part of their time to developing various research projects, and some also devote themselves to the field of teaching, to continue training qualified professionals.
It is a career with broad job opportunities and is considered, within medicine, as one of the best-paid specialties.
Graduates of the dermatology degree have the skills needed to perform aesthetic treatments and can perform some specific surgeries related to their career. The removal of moles, acne treatment, problems with spots on various parts of the body, whether due to age or caused by the impact of sunlight, all of these are tasks for dermatologists.
