Access to universities in Mexico

In Mexico there is no single mandatory exam for admission to all universities. Each institution publishes its requirements, calendar, selection mechanisms and available places. The general academic requirement to start a bachelor's degree is having completed high school or certifying equivalent studies.

The first step is to identify a specific call for applications. Then you should check the official validity of the program and calculate the costs of studying. The higher education offering includes universities and other institutions with different characteristics; their admission procedures are not interchangeable either.

What to check in a call for applications

Look for the exact name of the degree, the campus, the modality and the admission period. A call for applications may include only certain campuses or modalities. Having participated in a previous process does not mean that your registration will be valid for the next one.

  • Requirement of completed high school and minimum GPA, when required.
  • Date of registration, payment and submission of documents.
  • Type of exam, administration modality and permitted materials.
  • Interviews, courses or additional evaluations.
  • Publication of results and final enrollment deadline.

For example, two institutions may offer a bachelor's degree with a similar name and require different tests. Even within a university, a degree with indirect entry may require studying another program first or passing a later selection process.

What the EXANI-II is and who decides admission

The Ceneval EXANI-II is an assessment instrument used by higher education institutions. It is not a mandatory test for all of Mexico nor a national application that replaces enrollment at a university.

It assesses academic skills and subject knowledge. The user institution determines the modules and administration conditions for its process. That is why you should check its call for applications before preparing areas such as Mathematics or content related to Social Sciences.

Ceneval provides the assessment; the admission decision rests with the institution. A result alone does not guarantee a place. Check how it is combined with other criteria and use the official guides for the indicated version, because old EXANI-II formats do not necessarily describe the exam you will take.

Universities with their own exam: the example of UNAM

UNAM publishes its bachelor's admission processes through the Dirección General de Administración Escolar. Its selection process is not the EXANI-II. Check the call corresponding to your modality and admission type.

As a reference, the UNAM 2026 call required selected applicants to prove completed high school with a minimum GPA of 7.0 or its equivalent. This requirement is not a national average for all universities.

Always check the current process: a 2026 call is useful for learning the rules of that edition, but it does not mean enrollment is open nor that its dates can be automatically carried over to 2027.

How the pase reglamentado works

UNAM's pase reglamentado is an institutional pathway with its own rules. The 2026 information identifies the students from its high schools covered by that procedure and details registration, activities, and documentation.

It should not be described as a general agreement between any high school and any university. Assignment of degree and campus is governed by the regulations and the call; requesting an option does not mean you will automatically get it. Before making decisions about high school, check who can use this pathway and what conditions it requires.

Documentation to complete admission

Institutions may request a high school certificate, birth certificate, ID, CURP when applicable, photographs, payment receipts, and registration forms. The final list is the one in your call, including the accepted digital or physical format.

Check that first names, last names, and dates match. If you are still finishing high school, identify the deadline for proving its completion. A provisional certificate does not replace the certificate indefinitely.

Save your folio number and check the status of the procedure on the institutional portal. After learning the results, complete enrollment and confirm the initial activities. Paying an application fee or taking the exam are steps in the process, not completed university enrollment.

How to verify the RVOE of a private degree

The Reconocimiento de Validez Oficial de Estudios (RVOE) corresponds to a specific curriculum and program. The SEP explains that it does not automatically extend to all of an institution's programs. That is why it is not enough for advertising to say that the university has recognition.

In the SIRVOES search, check the program, campus, modality, agreement number, date, and the authority that granted it. If there is incorporation into a university authorized to grant it, verify that recognition directly with the corresponding institution.

A pending RVOE application is not equivalent to a granted recognition. At public universities, check their official offerings and institutional framework: do not indiscriminately apply a tool intended for the recognition of private programs.

If you completed high school in another country

Ask what recognition of your studies the university requires. The official information on revalidation distinguishes educational levels and documentation. Do not confuse revalidation of high school with revalidation of a bachelor's degree or with recognition of courses to continue a degree you already started.

Start your inquiry before the submission deadlines. Confirm the competent authority, the accepted documents, and how grades are handled. Academic procedures and procedures for staying in the country must be planned separately.

Costs, scholarships, and requirements to stay enrolled

Request information about the exam, enrollment, fees, materials, transportation, and housing. At a private institution, review increases and the conditions for keeping discounts or scholarships. At a public one, you also need to budget for everyday expenses and any applicable fees.

The Jóvenes Escribiendo el Futuro program has eligibility criteria and operating rules. It is not awarded to everyone who enters any university. Check the institution, the current conditions, and the official calendar before including that income in your budget.

Choosing well requires gathering four facts: what you will study, how you can get in, how valid the degree is and how you will support your studies. With those answers you can compare options beyond advertising or the result of a single exam.
