Admission to universities

To enter an undergraduate program in Colombia, the general path starts with the high school diploma and having taken the Estado Saber 11 exam, or a recognized alternative when applicable. Then you must meet the institution's admission requirements. There is no score that guarantees entry to any university nor a single application round for the whole country.

Before enrolling, also check that the institution and the program are officially recognized. Higher education includes different levels of training: knowing the qualification you will earn is as important as preparing for the entrance exam.

What role the Saber 11 exam plays

The Icfes Saber 11 assesses five areas: Critical Reading, Mathematics, Social and Citizenship, Natural Sciences and English. Taking it and meeting a university's selection criteria are different matters. The institution decides how it uses the results within its process.

Some universities consider the overall score; others value results by area or combine them with interviews, school record or their own tests. For example, a program may give significant weight to Mathematics, while another especially considers competencies linked to the Social Sciences. You must check the published formula, not infer it from the name of the degree.

Use the official exam guide to learn about its structure and the support provided. Check the calendar for your registration and communicate accessibility needs in good time. Do not use a list of questions or timings from an old edition as your only preparation.

Institutional exams, interviews and specific tests

Institutions may organize different procedures. The Universidad Nacional de Colombia, for example, has its own admission test and publishes the steps to check results, register programs and continue the process. Some artistic programs require specific evaluations.

This does not mean that all public universities use the same exam. Nor does it mean that a private university automatically admits anyone who can pay. You must find the call for applications for the program, campus and academic period you want to enter.

If they request an interview, prepare an explanation of your interests and learn the curriculum. If they require a portfolio, audition or additional test, review the format, criteria and submission date. Completing the general registration does not replace those requirements.

How to organize registration

  1. Choose the program and check that it is offered at the campus and in the modality you need.
  2. Read the full call for applications, including academic requirements and calendar.
  3. Complete registration and the registration payment when applicable.
  4. Complete the required tests, interviews or documents.
  5. Check the results and complete enrollment within the deadline.

Save receipts and confirm the status of each application. For example, paying the registration fees without completing the form may leave the process incomplete. Likewise, receiving an admission notice does not replace submitting documents or formalizing enrollment.

What documents you may be asked for

The list depends on the institution and your academic situation. Common background documents include:

  • Accepted identity document and updated contact information.
  • High school diploma, graduation certificate or provisionally accepted certificate.
  • Results of Saber 11 or proof of the recognized alternative.
  • Registration form and proof of payment, if applicable.
  • Additional certificates for special admission, transfers or support.

If you are finishing high school, ask by when you can submit the final diploma. A provisional authorization must have clear conditions. Do not assume that a photograph, an authenticated document or a form requested by one university will be required at all of them.

How to verify that the program is official

Check the Sistema Nacional de Información de la Educación Superior, SNIES. Verify the institution, the program, its code, the education level, the degree, the place where it is offered and the modality. Review the program status and the details of its qualified registration.

The qualified registration and high-quality accreditation are not equivalent. The first corresponds to the conditions required to offer the program; accreditation recognizes a high-quality evaluation. The fact that an institution advertises an accreditation does not replace verifying the specific offering in which you will enroll.

Also distinguish between a professional technician, a technologist and a university professional. They are different levels. Moving from one to another through cycles or recognition of courses requires an expressly established pathway: you do not automatically earn another degree by accumulating semesters.

If you finished high school outside Colombia

Check the Ministry of Education school studies validation process. The applicable route depends on your background and the agreements in force. Do not confuse having a high school diploma recognized with having a university degree validated.

Icfes provides for the recognition of certain exams taken abroad. Check whether yours is included and what must be submitted to the university. There are specific agreements, such as the one between Colombia and Spain, that must be applied according to their terms.

Tuition, financial aid and study costs

The Puedo Estudiar policy funds the net regular tuition of students who meet the program's conditions at public institutions. Its application requires verifying the requirements and the student's registration; it does not replace the admission process nor does it mean that all university expenses are covered.

Ask the institution how to certify your situation and which items are excluded. Include transportation, food, housing, connectivity, materials, and paperwork in your budget. At private institutions, compare tuition, increases, scholarships, and renewal conditions before taking on a financial commitment.

What to check before making the decision

Compare at least two curricula and review internships, schedules, and location. Check whether an online modality includes in-person meetings or assessments. If the career requires additional requirements to practice, identify them from the start.

Your choice should meet three conditions: training that interests you, an admission path you understand, and a sustainable budget. Preparing these points in advance will allow you to devote more attention to the start of the degree.
