Argentina has a federal education system made up of state-run and private institutions. If you want to study in the country, it is important to distinguish between the levels of education, check the validity of the degree, find out the admission requirements and calculate the expenses you will have during the degree.

Studying in Argentina: education system, universities, degrees and costs

How is the Argentine education system organized?

According to the National Education Law, the Argentine education system is organized into four levels:

  • Early childhood education.
  • Primary education.
  • Secondary education.
  • Higher education.

In addition, there are modalities intended to respond to specific needs, such as Professional Technical Education, Artistic Education, Special Education, Permanent Education for Youth and Adults, Rural Education and Intercultural Bilingual Education.

Higher education includes university institutions and non-university higher education institutions. The latter may offer teacher, technical, artistic and professional training.

What types of education can you study in Argentina?

In Argentina you can choose from different educational pathways. Not all of them award the same type of degree nor qualify you to carry out the same professional activities.

Technical secondary education

Technical secondary education combines general education with scientific, technological and practical knowledge linked to a specialty.

The qualification obtained is at secondary level. Depending on the guidance and the applicable regulations, additional requirements may need to be met to carry out certain professional activities or to enroll.

Technical higher education

Higher technical programs are taken after completing secondary education and are focused on specific occupational or professional areas.

They can be taught at higher institutes or universities. The duration, modality, professional scope and requirements depend on each curriculum.

Before enrolling, check that the institution is recognized and that the diploma has national validity when applicable. The official guide to validating diplomas and studies explains how to check the status of technical diplomas and vocational training certificates.

Vocational training

The vocational training is aimed at developing, updating or redirecting work skills. It may include different certification levels and programs related to production and service sectors.

Vocational training should not automatically be confused with a technical degree. A vocational training course or certificate may have different goals, length and scope than those of a higher technician diploma.

The existence of an official framework for a professional profile also does not mean that this training is currently offered in all provinces. Availability and enrollment must be checked with the corresponding jurisdiction or institution.

Teacher training

The teacher training can be completed at higher institutes and universities. Teacher training degrees prepare you to teach at specific levels, modalities or subjects.

Before choosing a teacher training program, check the scope of the diploma, the educational level it qualifies you for, and any requirements established by the jurisdiction where you want to work.

University education

University education includes undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees offered by recognized universities and university institutes.

The Degree Guide lets you search undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs by institution, field of knowledge, modality and location.

What is the difference between a technical degree and a diploma program?

A technical degree is a higher education program that may award an official undergraduate or higher technician diploma. Its curriculum includes a number of class hours, content and passing requirements established by the institution and applicable regulations.

A diploma program is usually a shorter training, updating or specialization course. It does not necessarily constitute a degree nor does it award an official university diploma.

A diploma program should not be presented as equivalent to a technical degree, bachelor's degree, or qualifying degree. Before enrolling, ask exactly what certificate is awarded, what recognition it holds, and what activities it allows you to perform.

What are pregraduate degrees?

Pregraduate university degrees are usually oriented toward technical or applied training. They may award qualifications such as university technician or other officially approved titles.

Some allow you to later continue an undergraduate degree through a completion cycle or the recognition of coursework. This continuation is not automatic: it depends on the agreements and the academic plan of each institution.

What are undergraduate degrees?

Undergraduate degrees include bachelor's degrees, engineering degrees, university teaching degrees, and other professional qualifications.

The theoretical duration depends on the approved curriculum. The Dirección Nacional de Gestión Universitaria states that undergraduate degrees must meet minimum workload and duration requirements, although some programs, such as medicine and certain engineering degrees, may last more years.

You can check information on official recognition, validity, and characteristics of degrees in the section on university degrees from the Dirección Nacional de Gestión Universitaria.

What are postgraduate studies?

Postgraduate studies include:

  • Specializations.
  • Master's degrees.
  • Doctorates.

To enroll, an undergraduate university degree is normally required, although each institution must provide its admission requirements.

Tuition fees, duration, modality, and scholarships depend on each program. It is not correct to state that all public postgraduate programs have a direct tuition cost of 0, as they may charge fees.

Postgraduate degrees must go through the evaluation and accreditation procedures established by university regulations.

How is the Argentine university system organized?

The university system is made up of officially recognized public and private institutions. These institutions may be universities or university institutes.

The number and classification of institutions may change with new authorizations, reorganizations or institutional changes. Therefore, it is safer to consult the official list of university institutions of the National University System than to keep an outdated manual list.

The Secretariat of Education publishes the Synthesis of University Information and the university statistical yearbooks, which bring together data on institutions, students, new enrollees, graduates, staff and academic offerings.

How is the Argentine university system organized?

The Higher Education Act establishes that the National University System is made up of:

  • National universities.
  • Provincial universities recognized by the national State.
  • Recognized private universities.
  • State university institutes.
  • Private university institutes.

Universities carry out activities in different areas of knowledge. University institutes concentrate their offerings in a single disciplinary area.

The number and classification of institutions changes with new creations, authorizations, transformations and closures. The list below was checked against the latest official consolidated list found for institutions of the National University System. To find the current offerings for each year, use the official degree guide.

National universities and other state university institutions

The following institutions are part of the national or state university sector. Some recently established universities may still be getting organized or may not yet have all their degrees available. Always check the current academic offerings.

Private universities and university institutes

Private institutions charge tuition fees. The amounts depend on the university, the degree, the format, and the campus. Some institutions have definitive authorization and others have provisional authorization.

Provisional authorization allows them to operate under institutional monitoring, but it should not be confused with definitive authorization. In all cases, check the specific degree and the official recognition of its diploma.

Provincial universities and university institutes

Foreign university and international organization

What is the difference between a university and a university institute?

The Higher Education Law establishes an institutional difference:

  • Universities carry out their activity in different areas of knowledge.
  • University institutes concentrate their academic offerings in a single disciplinary area.

Both types of institution can award university degrees when they are recognized and their degrees have the corresponding approval.

Are national universities better than private ones?

It cannot be claimed that an institution is better solely for being public or private. Quality can vary among institutions, faculties and degrees.

To compare options, evaluate:

  • The official recognition of the institution.
  • The national validity of the degree.
  • The accreditation of the degree when applicable.
  • The curriculum.
  • The experience of the teaching staff.
  • Professional internships.
  • Infrastructure and laboratories.
  • The study modality.
  • Location and schedules.
  • Student support services.
  • The degree's connection to the professional or productive sector.

Nor should it be claimed that a degree from a national university automatically opens more doors or implies more comprehensive training. Professional outcomes depend on the degree, the institution, the skills developed and each person's experience.

Does public university charge tuition in Argentina?

The updated text of the Law on Higher Education establishes that undergraduate studies in public institutions cannot have a direct tuition fee for:

  • Native Argentine citizens.
  • Argentine citizens by choice.
  • Foreigners with permanent residence in Argentina.

In these cases, undergraduate degrees have a direct enrollment cost of 0 for the student and are funded with public funds.

Public institutions may establish fees for educational services for foreign students who do not have permanent residence. Scholarships or specific agreements may also exist.

This rule refers to undergraduate studies. Courses, postgraduate diplomas, special services and postgraduate degrees may have different financial conditions.

What expenses can a student have?

Even if a degree has no direct tuition fee, studying involves other costs. Before enrolling, calculate:

  • Transportation.
  • Housing.
  • Food.
  • Connectivity.
  • Computer and software.
  • Books and materials.
  • Equipment or clothing.
  • Internships and academic trips.
  • Procedures and certifications.
  • Subsequent professional registration, where applicable.

In private institutions, enrollment, tuition fees, exam fees, materials, and other charges may also apply. Request in writing a breakdown of the amounts and how they may be updated.

Is university admission open?

Those who have finished secondary education can enter undergraduate university studies.

Institutions may establish enrollment, leveling, guidance, and support processes. They may also require documentation, introductory courses, or academic requirements related to the degree.

Regulations establish that leveling and guidance mechanisms must not be selective, exclusionary, or discriminatory.

People over 25 who have not finished secondary school may be admitted exceptionally if they demonstrate sufficient preparation, experience, or knowledge and pass the assessments established by the institution.

What do international students need?

Requirements depend on nationality, immigration status, educational level, and the institution.

In general, an international student may need:

  • ID document or passport.
  • Relevant immigration residency.
  • Secondary or university diploma.
  • Legalized or apostilled certificates.
  • Recognition of previous studies.
  • Official translation when documentation is in another language.
  • Additional certificates requested by the institution.

Immigration status can also affect tuition fees for state undergraduate degrees. Foreigners with permanent residency are included in the no-direct-tuition system established by the Higher Education Law.

To find out about current procedures, see the official section on validation and recognition of diplomas and studies.

How can you tell if a university institution is official?

It is not enough for an organization to use words like “university,” “institute,” “faculty,” or “academy” in its name.

The institution must be legally authorized to operate and the degree must comply with the corresponding procedures.

The Education Secretariat maintains a page of public university records where you can consult:

  • Official university institutions.
  • Degrees with official recognition.
  • Registered university graduates.
  • Validations.
  • Certification of diplomas and transcripts.
  • Institutional Distance Education Systems.
  • University regulations.

How to know if a degree has national validity?

Official recognition and national validity indicate that the degree has gone through the corresponding legal procedure.

Before enrolling, request:

  • Exact name of the degree.
  • Exact name of the degree.
  • Official recognition resolution.
  • Scope of the degree.
  • Authorized modality.
  • Campus where it is taught.

For university degrees, consult the Guide to university degrees and the public database of official degrees.

For secondary degrees, higher technical degrees or vocational training certificates, you can use the official national validity consultation.

Do not enroll based only on an advertisement, a social media post or the verbal statement of a salesperson.

What does it mean for a degree to be qualifying?

A degree with official recognition certifies academic training. However, in some careers it is also necessary to meet other conditions to practice.

Depending on the activity and jurisdiction, the following may be required:

  • Professional license.
  • Registration with a professional association or council.
  • Supervised internships.
  • Residency.
  • Exams.
  • Safety certifications.
  • Health or administrative requirements.

A university awards the degree, but it does not always decide on its own all the legal conditions for professional practice.

What is the role of CONEAU?

The Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria participates in institutional evaluation and in the accreditation of the degrees covered by the procedures established in the regulations.

Among other functions, it participates in the accreditation of postgraduate degrees and undergraduate degrees whose practice may affect the public interest, health, safety, the rights or the property of individuals.

That a degree does not appear in an accreditation search does not automatically mean that it is irregular. First, it must be determined whether that degree is required to go through an accreditation process.

What is Technical Professional Education?

Technical Professional Education includes technical secondary education, technical higher education and vocational training.

The Instituto Nacional de Educación Tecnológica is the national body specialized in this modality and operates within the Secretariat of Education.

The specific programs available depend on each province and on authorized institutions.

What are professionalizing internships?

Professionalizing internships bring students closer to situations and processes related to the occupational field of their training.

They can be carried out through projects, workshops, laboratories, simulations, activities in organizations or experiences linked to productive sectors.

They do not replace registration requirements nor do they, on their own, authorize the performance of tasks reserved for licensed professionals. Nor should they automatically be confused with an employment relationship.

What technical degrees can be strategic in Argentina?

The suitability of a training program depends on the region and the productive sector. In Argentina there are needs related to:

  • Computing and software development.
  • Automation and process control.
  • Electricity and electronics.
  • Electromechanics.
  • Industrial maintenance.
  • Renewable energies.
  • Oil and gas.
  • Mining.
  • Agroindustry and food.
  • Logistics.
  • Health and diagnostics.
  • Environment and safety.

This does not mean that any course related to those sectors guarantees employment. Before choosing, check regional demand, the practical training included, recognition of the qualification and the tasks graduates actually perform.

What scholarships are available for studying?

The national Government maintains the Progresar Scholarships program, which includes tracks for completion of compulsory education, higher education and vocational training.

Conditions, ages, academic requirements, income limits, amounts and enrollment periods may change with each call for applications. Check the current information before submitting your application.

Students in degrees linked to areas considered strategic can also look into the National Manuel Belgrano Strategic Scholarships Program. The availability of degrees, places and calls for applications must be checked for the corresponding year.

In addition, universities, provinces, municipalities and organizations may offer their own scholarships for transportation, housing, meals, materials or financial aid.

How does artificial intelligence affect your studies?

Artificial intelligence can help you find information, organize materials, prepare drafts, practice exercises, summarize texts and analyze data.

It should be used as an auxiliary tool. It does not replace learning, reading sources, professional judgment or ethical responsibility.

Its risks include:

  • False or invented answers.
  • Interpretation errors.
  • Bias.
  • Academic plagiarism.
  • Exposure of private information.
  • Misuse of personal or professional data.

Do not upload medical records, client data, institutional documents, confidential evaluations or personal information to services that have not been authorized.

Can you study a degree remotely?

There are in-person degrees, remote degrees and combinations of virtual and in-person activities.

A degree offered remotely must have the corresponding recognition and be taught by an authorized institution. Some programs may require exams, practical training, residencies or in-person meetings.

Before enrolling, check:

  • The authorized modality.
  • The campus or support unit.
  • The mandatory in-person activities.
  • The technological requirements.
  • The validity of the degree.
  • The additional costs.

Public university records include information on the Institutional Distance Education Systems.

What national body is currently responsible for education?

National education policy is managed by the Secretariat of Education of the Ministry of Human Capital.

The Secretariat includes areas related to university policies, educational innovation, information and evaluation, teacher training, technological education and the Federal Education Council.

The organization, administration and supervision of the system also involves the provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Therefore, some procedures must be carried out before the educational authority of the corresponding jurisdiction.

What do you need to check before enrolling?

  1. The institution: check that it is officially recognized.
  2. The degree: verify that it exists and is taught at the indicated campus.
  3. The degree: look for its official recognition and national validity.
  4. The modality: confirm whether it is in-person, distance or blended.
  5. The duration: review the curriculum and the workload.
  6. The requirements: check admission, documentation and mandatory activities.
  7. The cost: calculate fees and indirect expenses.
  8. The internships: check whether they exist and how they are organized.
  9. Professional practice: check whether it requires registration or licensing.
  10. Continuity: ask whether it allows you to have subjects recognized or to pursue an undergraduate degree.

So, is it worth studying in Argentina?

Argentina offers a wide diversity of institutions and university, technical, teaching and professional degrees. State institutions allow undergraduate studies with a direct tuition cost of 0 for Argentine citizens and foreigners with permanent residence, although there are always expenses associated with studying.

The key is not to choose only based on the name of the university or an advertisement. Before making a decision, check the validity of the degree, compare the curriculum, calculate the costs and analyze whether the training aligns with your goals and with the opportunities in the region where you want to live.

A recognized degree, supported by practical skills, experience and continuous learning, offers a more secure foundation than any promise of quick employment or guaranteed success.
