Vocational Training in Spain
Guide to Vocational Training in Spain
Vocational Training in Spain allows you to develop skills to work in sectors such as computing, administration, industry, energy, services or personal care. Its system combines different levels and formats, from partial accreditations to training cycles and specialization courses.
To choose, you need to identify which level you can take, which qualification or accreditation you will obtain and how the in-company training is organized. You should also compare authorized centers, study modes and admission requirements of the autonomous community where you want to study.

How FP is organized: grades A, B, C, D and E
The official portal TodoFP explains the grades of the Vocational Training system. They should not be confused with university degrees:
- Grade A: partial accreditation of competence.
- Grade B: certificate of competence.
- Grade C: professional certificate.
- Grade D: basic, intermediate and advanced training cycles.
- Grade E: specialization courses.
Intermediate training cycles lead to the Technician qualification and advanced training cycles to the Senior Technician qualification. In specialization courses, the names and requirements depend on the level. A Vocational Training Master's is not the same as a university master's degree.
This system allows for learning and accreditation pathways, but you should not assume that any private course is part of it. Check the official name of the program and the authorization of the center.
What you need to access a training cycle
The official FP access requirements depend on the level and allow different entry routes. Meeting an access requirement does not guarantee a place: admission may apply priorities and quotas.
For basic level, it is not correct to generally require that you have already finished ESO. The standard route requires being fifteen years old or turning fifteen in the calendar year, having completed the third year of ESO —or exceptionally the second year— and the corresponding proposal from the teaching team, under the conditions of the educational procedure.
For intermediate level, the ESO certificate is one of the routes, along with other qualifications and planned alternatives, such as courses or entrance exams. For higher level, Bachillerato, the Technician certificate and other regulated routes may be accepted. Check which one applies to your situation and which documents you must submit.
What it means for training to be dual
Dual VET divides learning between the training centre and the company or equivalent body. In-company training is integrated into the pathway and requires coordination and tutoring; it should not be understood simply as an internship added on after all the classes are finished.
In the general scheme, the placement is educational in nature and does not in itself involve an employment contract. In the intensive scheme, company involvement is greater and the model includes a training contract.
There is a nuance for programmes coming from the previous system: the Organic Law 3/2022 provides for a transition from the grant system to the contract until 31 December 2028. Ask the centre which scheme applies exactly, what financial conditions exist and who manages Social Security.
Examples of training cycles to compare
Web Application Development
The Higher Technician in Web Application Development qualification focuses on applications for web environments. If you are interested in Computer Science, review its modules and projects to compare it with other training cycles or with a university degree.
Administration and Finance
The Higher Technician in Administration and Finance programme covers administrative, accounting, financial and management processes. It lets you explore tasks related to Business Management. Compare the actual content and the centre's partner organisations.
Renewable Energies
The Senior Technician in Renewable Energy is connected with facilities and processes in the energy sector. It can help you explore interests close to Energy Engineering, although both qualifications have a different level, length and professional responsibilities.
If you are drawn to STEM careers, also check how much weight Mathematics, workshop work and problem-solving carry. FP also includes options related to Education and services. For Design interests, distinguish FP programs from professional visual arts and design education, which has its own framework.
How to choose a school and study format
Check that the school is authorized to teach the qualification, at the campus and in the format offered. Consult the offerings of the autonomous community and the TodoFP fact sheets. A school's advertising does not replace that check.
Ask about equipment, schedules, projects, tutoring and the organization of in-company training. If you already work, ask how activities are made compatible and what requirements exist to request a possible exemption based on experience. It is not granted automatically for having just any job.
The distance learning format can make part of the coursework easier, but it does not necessarily eliminate in-person exams, workshops or in-company training. Ask for a calendar with all mandatory attendance before enrolling.
If you have foreign studies or want to continue at university
When you use foreign studies for admission, check the applicable procedure for homologation and validation of non-university qualifications. Not all situations require the same procedure, and a submitted application is not equivalent to a favorable decision.
The Advanced Technician diploma gives access to university studies through the corresponding pathway. For programs in high demand, you may need to improve your admission grade through the designated exams. Credit recognition depends on the university and the relationship between the programs; it is not guaranteed simply by completing any program.
What to check before applying for a place
Get your paperwork organized, note the admission deadlines, and prepare alternatives that match your interests. Ask for complete information on prices, materials, and financial aid. Scholarships and public calls must be checked on the corresponding official education portals.
Compare the work you would do during the program with what you enjoy learning. Choosing FP means committing to hands-on activities, studying, and follow-up: knowing that routine helps more than a general promise of employment.
