How does university admission work in Spain?
Universities in Spain
The path to university access in Spain depends on your previous studies. Those coming from the Spanish Bachillerato must pass the Prueba de Acceso a la Universidad (PAU). There are also routes for graduates of Higher Vocational Training, students from foreign systems, adults, and those who already hold a university qualification.
Access and admission do not mean the same thing. Access certifies that you meet the requirements to apply for university studies; admission determines whether you get a place in a specific degree and school. Before choosing, also check that the degree is official.

Access from Bachillerato: what the PAU is
The PAU is the current name of the exam known in previous sittings as EBAU or EvAU. Its basic framework is regulated in the Royal Decree 534/2024 and its amendments. The education authorities and universities publish how each sitting is organized.
In the Bachillerato route, the access score combines 60% of the Bachillerato average grade, excluding Religion, and 40% of the PAU. The average of the exam must be at least 4 and the weighted result at least 5.
For example, a Bachillerato average of 8 and a PAU of 7 give an access score of 7.6: 8 × 0.60 + 7 × 0.40. That figure does not guarantee a place in every degree.
Check the exams for your track. Among the common subjects is the choice between History of Spain and History of Philosophy, in addition to the other required subjects. The co-official language and its possible exemptions should be checked in the regional sitting.
Admission score and cutoff score
To compete for a place you can improve your score through weighted subjects. In the usual public-university system, admission can reach 14 points. The weighting coefficients depend on the degree and the university; you should choose your subjects after checking those weightings.
The access information from Universidad Complutense explains, for example, how points are added and how grades from previous exam sittings are used. Check the rules of the university district where you will submit your application.
The cut-off grade reflects the grade of the last person admitted in a specific allocation, degree program and quota. It is a reference from the previous process, not a promise for the next one. An increase in demand or a change in the number of places can alter it.
Access from Higher-Level Vocational Training
With a Técnico Superior de Formación Profesional qualification you can gain access without taking the compulsory PAU. Your average grade for the training cycle is the basis for access. If you need to improve your position, you can sit the designated subjects to raise your admission grade.
The access route from Higher-Level FP does not guarantee a place in your chosen degree. Nor does it mean that subjects will be recognized automatically: the university must apply its credit recognition agreements and procedures.
Students with foreign studies
The route depends on the education system in which you studied and on the requirements of your destination university. Not all international students must complete the same procedures or take the same exams.
UNEDasiss distinguishes the types of international students. In some cases access accreditation is involved; in others you need to have your studies officially recognized as equivalent to the Spanish Bachillerato. The Pruebas de Competencias EspecÃficas (PCE) and other services are requested according to the route and the admission criteria.
Check the information by country and university before choosing subjects. Requesting accreditation is not the same as submitting the university pre-registration. You must complete both procedures when applicable and respect their deadlines.
For example, a person with the International Baccalaureate and another person with a foreign qualification that requires official recognition may follow different routes, even if they apply for the same degree. The country of residence alone does not identify the correct route.
Pathways for adults and other prior studies
- People over 25: there is a specific exam for those who do not hold another qualification that allows admission.
- People over 40: the route requires work or professional experience related to the degree and not holding another qualifying qualification; it includes assessment of background and an interview about professional experience.
- People over 45: an adapted exam and a personal interview are provided for, under the established conditions.
- University graduates: they may apply for admission through the route corresponding to their qualification.
Meeting the age requirement does not automatically grant a place. If you have partial university studies, ask about admission with credit recognition and distinguish that procedure from general first-year entry.
Pre-registration, documentation and enrollment
At public universities, applications are usually handled through the pre-registration procedures of each region or district. Rank the degrees by your true preference and check how allocations, waiting lists and confirmations of continued interest work.
Prepare your identity document, academic certificates, admission grades and the specific documents for your route. Foreign studies may require accreditation, official recognition, translation or other background documents. The call for applications indicates what is accepted provisionally and when final documentation is required.
Private universities may add their own interviews or assessments, but they must comply with the legal requirements for admission to official degrees. Reserving a place does not replace proving the required academic pathway.
How to check that the degree is official
Check the Registry of Universities, Centres and Degrees (RUCT). Check the degree name, the university and the responsible centre. Compare those details with the format, the curriculum and the offer you receive.
A university-specific degree or continuing education qualification is not equivalent to an official university degree. If you want to practise a regulated career, check whether the qualification qualifies you directly or whether it requires further training. This check also matters when choosing Education studies or other professional fields.
How much studying costs and what financial aid is available
In public universities, the amount depends on the prices applicable to credits and other enrollment conditions. In private ones, check their fees and contractual conditions. Add accommodation, transport, food, materials and possible internships outside your city.
The general scholarships from the Ministry of Education have academic, financial and administrative requirements, as well as their own deadline. Applying for aid does not reserve a place nor guarantee it will be granted. Also check the aid from your community and university.
Before deciding, gather your access route, the grade needed to compete, the deadlines, the official recognition of the degree and the budget. That information lets you compare options without relying solely on a cutoff grade.
