University access in Peru

To start a university degree in Peru you need to certify completion of secondary school and secure a place through the university's admission process. There are different admission tracks, but their requirements, assessments, and places depend on each institution. There is no single national exam that replaces all university admission rounds.

Before paying a registration fee, check the university, the degree, the campus, and the admission track. Choosing a higher education option requires reviewing both the entry requirements and the validity of the training you will receive.

The regular admission exam

It is one of the entry routes used by universities. Each call specifies the areas assessed, the structure of the test, the scoring criteria, and the distribution of places. Preparing for one institution does not automatically mean knowing another one's exam.

Check the prospectus or regulations for the process that applies to you. There you must identify whether there is a minimum score, how merit is ranked, which documents allow you to apply, and what conditions you need to meet before enrolling.

For example, getting a good score may not be enough if other people take the available places in your degree. The useful reference is the complete selection procedure, not just the score from a previous exam.

The Central Admission Office of San Marcos brings together access to its processes, regulations, and procedures. Check the edition before buying materials or making payments: a results page is not an open registration call.

Special tracks: what you should check

Universities may offer tracks for top-ranked school students, degree holders or graduates, transfers, athletes, or other groups defined in their regulations. The name of a track does not imply automatic admission or lack of assessment.

The Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería publishes its tracks and requirements. It is an example of why you should check what background each university accepts, what certificates it requires, and how it awards places.

If you were one of the top-ranked students in your graduating class, prepare the corresponding certificate and check which rankings and graduation years the call for applications accepts. That school recognition does not guarantee access to any degree at all universities in the country.

Pre-university centers and admission for adults

A pre-university center may offer preparation or an admission modality linked to assessments and places. Enrolling in the course is not the same as obtaining a place. Check how many are allocated, what performance is required and whether there are additional tests.

For example, the information about UNI admission 2026-2 covers specific conditions for admission through CEPRE-UNI and a vocational aptitude test for Architecture. It is a reference for that edition, not currently open enrollment.

If you resume your studies after several years, review the options for people with work experience or previous studies. Turning 30 does not by itself grant the right to enter any university without an exam. You must meet the conditions of an actually published modality.

Documentation to apply and enroll

The call for applications establishes the exact documents. You usually need identification, secondary school certificate, form, photograph and receipts for the corresponding payments. Special modalities add merit certificates, higher studies, sports or other background records.

  • Check that the certificate allows verification of the completion of your studies.
  • Check that your details match in the registration and in the documents.
  • Distinguish the files required to apply from the originals needed when you enroll.
  • Confirm whether you can register while you finish secondary school and when you must prove its completion.
  • Keep the receipts and check the status of the procedure on the official portal.

After obtaining a place, follow the instructions to provide documents and formalize enrollment. Do not assume that appearing on a list of admitted students completes all the administrative steps.

How to verify licensing and the academic offering

Consult the Sunedu's list of licensed universities. Then compare the degree, premises, campus and modality offered with the corresponding official information. The well-known name of an institution is not enough to verify a specific offering.

Check the name of the degree and the qualification, the study plan and the stated duration. If the marketing information does not match the records or resolutions, request a documented explanation before enrolling. For a blended or distance program, ask where assessments and internships take place.

Licensing and accreditation are different processes. The information from Sunedu and Sineace helps you understand their relationship: you should not use an advertised accreditation as a substitute for checking the legal operating conditions.

If you completed secondary school outside Peru

The Ministry of Education provides the procedure to revalidate or validate foreign school studies. The route depends on the applicable agreements and on the correspondence of studies. Check which certificates, legalizations or translations the procedure requires.

Submit to the university the background documents that correspond to your situation. Recognition of secondary school does not replace university admission. If you already took subjects of a degree in another country, ask about transfer and course validation: they are procedures distinct from school recognition.

University costs and Beca 18

At a public university there may be admission fees and administrative procedures. At a private one you must include enrollment and tuition payments in the budget. In both cases consider transportation, food, housing, connectivity and materials, especially if you will study in another city.

The Pronabec Beca 18 program has its own modalities, stages and requirements. The 2026 call published on the portal should not be interpreted as permanently open enrollment. Check which process is current and which stage you can access.

You must also check the list of eligible institutions and programs for the relevant call for applications. Being admitted to a university and receiving the scholarship are separate decisions. Don't commit to expenses counting on aid that has not yet been awarded.

Useful questions before choosing

Can I transfer without repeating the whole degree? The receiving university must evaluate your previous studies and decide which courses it will recognize. Ask about the procedure and its costs before calculating how much you still need to complete.

Is a short course equivalent to a degree? No. Check the type of credential and the institution that issues it. A training certificate does not become a university degree or qualification just because it has a similar name.

What else should I compare besides income? Subjects, internships, schedules, support services, and total budget. An informed decision takes into account how you will study after securing the spot.
