Internships in Brazil

In Brazil, educational internships are known as estágio. They allow you to apply knowledge from your degree in an organization, but they must maintain an educational purpose and the involvement of the educational institution. Before accepting an offer, you should distinguish the mandatory estágio from the non-mandatory one: that difference affects, among other matters, payment of the stipend and transportation assistance.

The main reference is the Lei 11.788, known as the Lei do Estágio, with its amendments. It is not enough for a company to use that word in a posting. Enrollment, tasks, supervision, and documentation must correspond to a real educational experience.

Mandatory and non-mandatory estágio: what changes

The estágio obrigatório is part of the requirements established in the pedagogical project of the degree. The estágio não obrigatório is an optional activity that complements training. The classification depends on the educational program and not on the company's preference for paying or not paying.

In the non-mandatory one, the stipend or other compensation and transportation assistance are required. In the mandatory one, the law does not generally impose those payments, although they may be provided for in the agreement or in the rules of an institution. For that reason, ask for written confirmation of the financial conditions before you start.

An internship in Education included in the curriculum may require observation and supervised activities. An optional experience in a corporate training area may be organized differently. The same professional field allows for different proposals; the university must confirm how they relate to your studies.

The central document is the Termo de Compromisso de Estágio

The Termo de Compromisso de Estágio, or TCE, brings together the student, the educational institution, and the host organization. Conditions and responsibilities are specified there. A general agreement between university and company, when one exists, does not replace the individual commitment.

Check that the activities are described in an understandable way and that the people responsible for monitoring are identified. “Apoyo al área” says little about what you will learn. It is better to know whether you will observe procedures, analyze information, develop a project, or collaborate in a specific phase of production.

As an example of the institutional procedure, the Universidad Federal de Ceará publishes instructions for processing the non-mandatory internship TCE. Each institution has its own review and signing process. Ask about deadlines before agreeing on a start date with the company.

How many hours can you do?

For higher education students, intermediate-level professional education students, and regular secondary school students, the usual rule is a maximum of six hours daily and thirty weekly. There are other limits and specific situations; that schedule should not be interpreted as a universal working day for every student.

The law also provides for compatibility with academic assessments and a reduction in working hours during those periods, under the terms of the signed agreement. Staying at the same organization may not exceed two years, except for the exception provided for people with disabilities.

Before accepting, cross-check the offered schedule with classes, commutes, and assignments. If the activity includes remote work, clarify from where it is performed, how the work is recorded, and what resources the organization provides. Working from home does not eliminate the need for tutoring or coordination with your studies.

Supervision, insurance, and time off

The experience requires academic support and supervision at the host organization. Ask for an initial meeting to agree on objectives and a follow-up meeting to review progress. Reports should reflect what you do and learn; signing them without reading them can hide differences between the plan and the actual activity.

There must be personal accident insurance. For mandatory internships, the educational institution may assume that coverage under the legal conditions. Confirm the policy and the procedure in the event of an accident before starting, especially if there is fieldwork, laboratory work, or travel between sites.

The system provides for a thirty-day break when the duration reaches one year, and proportional for shorter periods; if there is a stipend or compensation, the break must be paid. You can compare these issues with the Instituto Federal de São Paulo internship FAQs and with your degree coordinator.

Examples of experiences linked to different degrees

A good offer lets you understand what skill you are going to practice. These examples are for guidance and must be adapted to the level of education, the means available and academic approval:

  • Laboratory and environment: record samples, organize observations and prepare reports under supervision, without taking on responsibilities for which you are not yet qualified.
  • Computer Science: collaborate on software testing, documentation or incident analysis with review by a responsible person.
  • Design: research needs, prepare proposals and receive feedback on pieces or prototypes.

In the interview, ask what tasks you will do during the first weeks and what result they expect at the end. An organization that can explain that path lets you better evaluate the proposal than a description focused only on availability and speed.

Where to look and what to ask

Check first with the internship coordination office and the official channels of your institution. In the federal public sector, the Federal Government Internship Program brings together information about its specific scheme. The requirements, amounts and selection processes must be checked in each current call.

Prepare a brief résumé in the requested language and select projects you can explain. If you have no work experience, present academic work clearly: objective, tools, personal participation and learning. Do not attribute results from an entire team solely to your involvement.

Can a foreign person participate?

You must confirm both academic eligibility and your immigration status. The regulations cover situations involving foreign students and exchanges, but that does not turn any course or stay into automatic authorization. Ask the institution to review the framework before signing.

If you are comparing destinations, you can also check how internships in Argentina work. Avoid transferring schedules, documents or rights from one country to the other: each proposal must be reviewed under its own rules.
