How to get into a university in Argentina and check that the degree is official

To get into an undergraduate university degree in Argentina, the general academic requirement is to have completed secondary education. Admission is free and unrestricted, although each university may set its own dates, procedures, documentation, introductory courses and academic conditions. Before enrolling, it is also important to check that the institution, degree, campus, modality and diploma are officially recognized.

How to get into an Argentine university

Is admission to university free and unrestricted?

The Higher Education Act establishes that people who have completed secondary education can freely and unrestrictedly enter undergraduate degrees.

This means that leveling and guidance courses cannot be used as selective, exclusionary or discriminatory mechanisms.

Free and unrestricted admission does not mean that students can start without completing procedures or that subjects are automatically passed. Universities may require:

  • Online pre-registration.
  • Submission and validation of documents.
  • Mandatory introductory courses.
  • Diagnostic evaluations.
  • Leveling activities.
  • University guidance workshops.
  • Common cycles or initial subjects.
  • Attendance and regular standing requirements.

Can there be eliminatory entrance exams?

In undergraduate degrees, leveling and guidance evaluations cannot function as filters intended to exclude applicants.

A university may administer a diagnostic evaluation to learn students' level, organize support activities or determine what content they need to reinforce.

It may also require passing initial subjects or cycles to advance in the curriculum. These subjects are part of the academic path and do not necessarily constitute an eliminatory exam prior to admission.

Graduate programs, curricular complementation cycles and degrees that require previous studies may establish specific admission requirements and selection processes.

Is pre-registering, enrolling and starting the degree the same thing?

They are different stages:

  • Pre-registration: the applicant completes a form with their personal and academic details.
  • Registration: the university receives and validates the documentation.
  • Admission: the institution confirms that the entry requirements are met.
  • Academic entry: the student begins introductory courses, common cycles, or subjects.
  • Progress in the degree: they must pass subjects, meet prerequisite requirements, and maintain regular status.

Completing a pre-registration does not guarantee that the process is finished. Registration may remain pending until the secondary school diploma, the academic transcript, a validation, or any other requested document is submitted.

What are introductory courses and common cycles?

Introductory courses prepare the student to start the degree and adapt to university life.

They may include content in:

  • Academic reading and writing.
  • Mathematics.
  • Physics.
  • Chemistry.
  • Computer science.
  • Study methodology.
  • Vocational guidance.
  • Use of the virtual campus.
  • Organization of the study plan.

Some universities offer these activities before classes begin. Others include them as subjects or cycles that are part of the degree.

General entry requirements

Is it mandatory to have finished secondary school?

To enter an undergraduate degree, secondary education must have been completed.

The university may allow conditional registration when the applicant has finished coursework but has not yet received the diploma or the final academic transcript.

Can you start university while still owing secondary school subjects?

Some institutions allow applicants to register conditionally while they complete pending secondary school subjects.

Each university may determine:

  • How many pending subjects it accepts.
  • By what date they must be passed.
  • What certificate the applicant must submit.
  • When the final diploma must be submitted.
  • What happens if secondary school is not completed within the deadline.

When the student does not resolve their situation by the set date, registration may be suspended or lose validity.

Documentation to register at a university

There is no identical list for all institutions. Documents depend on the university, the degree, and the applicant's situation.

Certain programs may request additional documentation, such as:

  • Certificate of physical fitness.
  • Vaccination certificate.
  • Health examination.
  • Criminal background check.
  • Artistic aptitude test.
  • Language certificate.

University admission for international students

How are secondary school studies completed in another country validated?

Those who finished secondary school outside Argentina must complete the validation or recognition of their studies to pursue a higher-level degree.

The procedure depends on whether Argentina has an educational agreement with the country that issued the diploma.

Both procedures allow students to prove that the secondary school studies completed abroad qualify them to continue higher education in Argentina.

What residency does an international student need?

The immigration category depends on nationality, the length of studies and the student's particular situation.

The Dirección Nacional de Migraciones provides for permanent, temporary and transitory residencies. Temporary student residence allows you to remain legally in the country during the authorized period.

The options and requirements can be found in the section on residencies of the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones.

Admission for people over 25 without completed secondary school

People over 25 may apply for exceptional admission to a higher-level degree even if they have not completed secondary education.

To gain admission they must pass an assessment established by the province, the Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires or the corresponding university.

In that instance they must demonstrate:

  • Preparation related to the studies they wish to begin.
  • Work experience related to the degree.
  • Aptitude for completing the program.
  • Sufficient knowledge to study successfully.

Being over 25 does not result in automatic admission. The institution determines the dates, contents, documentation and assessment format.

How much does it cost to study at an Argentine university?

State universities

Undergraduate degrees at state universities have no direct tuition fee for native or optative Argentine citizens or for foreigners with permanent residence in Argentina.

Decree 366/2025 allows state institutions to set fees for foreign students who do not have permanent residence.

The regulation does not set a single national amount nor does it require all universities to charge. Each institution may determine whether it applies a fee, its amount, the conditions and possible exceptions.

Private universities

Private universities may charge for:

  • Admission enrollment.
  • Monthly tuition fees.
  • Examination fees.
  • Administrative services.
  • Special practicums.
  • Materials.
  • Issuance of certificates.

Some institutions offer scholarships, discounts, financing or fee reductions based on the student's academic performance or financial situation.

Other study-related expenses

Even if a degree has no direct tuition fee, studying can generate expenses for:

  • Transportation.
  • Housing.
  • Food.
  • Connectivity.
  • Books.
  • Photocopies.
  • Computer and software.
  • Instruments.
  • Clothing.
  • Trips and academic practicums.
  • Legalization and translation of documents.

How to verify that a university and a degree are official

Before enrolling, verify that the university, the degree, the diploma, the campus and the modality are officially recognized.

How to know if a university is recognized?

The Argentine university system is made up of state and private universities and university institutes recognized by the State.

The list can be consulted in the official section for university institutions of the Sistema Universitario Nacional.

What does it mean for a degree to have official recognition?

Official recognition indicates that the degree and the diploma were evaluated and approved through the procedure established by the State.

Approval is formalized through a resolution that identifies, among other elements:

  • The university.
  • The name of the diploma.
  • The level of the degree.
  • The curriculum.
  • The duration and workload.
  • The admission requirements.
  • The scope of the diploma.

What does it mean for a diploma to have national validity?

National validity allows the diploma to be officially recognized throughout Argentine territory.

It also certifies that the academic training was approved in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Information on official recognition, diplomas and degrees can be consulted in the section for degrees from the Dirección Nacional de Gestión Universitaria.

Where can official degrees and diplomas be consulted?

The Dirección Nacional de Gestión Universitaria brings together tools to consult:

  • Official university diplomas.
  • Recognized institutions.
  • University degrees.
  • University graduates.
  • Validations.
  • Distance education systems.
  • University regulations.

These resources can be found in the section for public university registries.

What details should match?

When checking a degree, make sure the following match:

  • The official name of the university.
  • The exact title name.
  • The faculty or academic unit.
  • The campus or location.
  • The in-person or distance learning modality.
  • The official recognition resolution.
  • The current curriculum.

A degree may be authorized at one campus and not at another. It may also be recognized for in-person learning, but not for a distance learning program with the same name.

Official recognition, national validity and accreditation

Official recognition

It is the legal approval of the degree and the title by the competent education authority.

National validity

It allows the title to be officially recognized throughout Argentina.

CONEAU accreditation

Accreditation is an additional academic evaluation for postgraduate programs and certain state-regulated undergraduate degrees.

The Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria reviews these degrees according to the standards established for each discipline.

Accredited degrees can be looked up in the CONEAU search tool.

Professional registration

Professional registration is the authorization required to practice certain careers within a jurisdiction.

A title may have official recognition and national validity, but the graduate may need a registration issued by a professional association, a board or a public authority.

This requirement may apply to careers such as:

  • Medicine.
  • Nursing.
  • Dentistry.
  • Psychology.
  • Law.
  • Architecture.
  • Engineering.
  • Accounting.

What are the scopes of a title?

The scopes describe the activities for which a person is trained during the degree.

They may indicate that the graduate is prepared to:

  • Design projects.
  • Conduct research.
  • Prepare reports.
  • Manage organizations.
  • Direct production processes.
  • Develop systems.
  • Provide advice.
  • Perform technical or professional tasks.

The scopes are established according to the study plan, the subjects, the workload and the competencies developed.

What are reserved activities?

Reserved activities are tasks that can only be performed by those who hold certain state-regulated degrees.

They apply when professional practice may directly affect:

  • Health.
  • Safety.
  • People's rights.
  • Property.
  • The environment.
  • The public interest.

Not all tasks related to a career are exclusive. The reservation applies only to activities expressly defined by regulations.

How long must a university degree last?

To obtain official recognition, degrees must meet the minimum duration and academic workload conditions established for their level.

  • Undergraduate degrees: as a general rule, they must reach a minimum of four years and 2,600 clock hours, or its equivalence in academic credits.
  • Pregraduate degrees: as a general rule, they must reach a minimum of two years and 1,400 clock hours.
  • Postgraduate programs: must meet the specific conditions established for specializations, master's degrees and doctorates.

Many degrees exceed these minimums due to their internships, content and professional activities.

What is a Ciclo de Complementación Curricular?

A Ciclo de Complementación Curricular, also known as CCC, allows a person with a prior higher education degree to continue their education to obtain an undergraduate university degree.

For example, a graduate of a technical program can complete a related bachelor's degree without starting over from the first year.

Having a technical degree does not allow automatic entry into any top-up cycle. The university must expressly accept the previous degree and verify that it is related to the new degree.

The institution may establish:

  • What prior degrees it accepts.
  • What duration the prior education must have.
  • What minimum workload it requires.
  • What subjects must have been passed.
  • What relationship must exist between both degrees.

Upon completing the cycle, the student obtains an undergraduate university degree, provided the program has official recognition and national validity.

How to verify a distance degree

A distance degree must be authorized to be taught through that modality. It is not enough for the university to be recognized or for an in-person version of the same degree to exist.

Before enrolling, check:

  • That the distance modality is authorized.
  • That the university has its Institutional Distance Education System validated.
  • That the campus or support unit is recognized.
  • How exams are conducted.
  • Whether there is mandatory in-person practical training.
  • What technological resources are needed.
  • That the degree has national validity.
  • That the name matches the officially registered one.

University distance education systems can be consulted in the public registries of the Dirección Nacional de Gestión Universitaria.

Can a university teach a degree in another location?

A university may offer a degree outside its main campus, but the extension, branch campus or location must have the corresponding authorizations.

Before enrolling in a program taught in another city, verify:

  • The responsible university.
  • The exact campus.
  • The modality.
  • The degree resolution.
  • The authorization of the program in that location.
  • The place where the practical training and exams will take place.

What scholarships can university students apply for?

Higher education degree students can find financial aid through:

  • Progresar Superior Scholarships.
  • Manuel Belgrano Strategic Scholarships.
  • University programs.
  • Provincial and municipal scholarships.
  • Assistance with meals, transportation, housing and connectivity.

The requirements and enrollment procedures for Progresar can be consulted in the official Progresar Superior section.

The strategic degrees included in the Manuel Belgrano Scholarships are published on the official program page.
