Theologians conduct research, often in a university setting, to understand the theories and ideas underlying different religious beliefs, as well as their relevance to today's world.

A theologian is a person who studies and teaches the doctrines of Christ. Theology studies, teaches and practices the doctrines of the Christian faith. There is a wide variety of theological disciplines, including biblical studies, epistemology, ethics, philosophy and sociology.

Most theology degrees approach the subject with a deep knowledge of their respective fields.

Theologies require research, academic papers, group projects, and the continuous examination of biblical texts to interpret them. As a result, a theology degree needs to have a strong and independent mind. Therefore, it is important for the theology degree to take courses in critical thinking, analytical reasoning and organizational skills; having a degree in theology will allow a theology student to work as a theologian, chaplain, pastor, academic consultant, or even a lay minister.
