Why Study Foreign Trade?
Foreign Trade involves completing transactions in a complex global market. You will need to learn the theories and regulations that govern international trade.
What is the Foreign Trade degree about?
In general terms, it is about foreign trade services and goods that are destined for a country other than their commercial country of origin. Foreign Trade also refers to investment in foreign securities, although this is a less common use of the term. Foreign trade has to do with imports and exports. The backbone of any foreign trade between countries is the services and products that are traded to another place outside the boundaries of a particular country.
Some nations are experts in producing certain products at a profitable price. Perhaps it is because they have the labor supply or abundant natural resources that constitute the necessary raw material. No matter what the reason, the ability of some countries to produce what other nations want or need is the raison d'être of foreign trade.
In some cases, the products produced at one stage of foreign trade are very similar to other products that are produced around the world, at least in their raw form. Therefore, these products, known as merchandise, are often grouped together in a mass market and sold. This is known as commodities trading. The most common products often sold in foreign trade are oil and grain.
Why study foreign trade?
Because by studying Foreign Trade you will learn all the laws and theories that regulate Foreign Trade. You will learn what you need to train in everything related to export and import and trade at the international level.
How long is the Foreign Trade degree? Is this degree known by another name?
Foreign Trade, also known as International Trade, lasts about 4 or 5 years, depending on the country.
What job opportunities does Foreign Trade offer?
Those who earn a Bachelor's degree in Foreign Trade often begin their professional career in the internal departments of companies, especially multinationals, and move on to international jobs after gaining experience.
Is studying foreign trade the same as studying international trade? What is the difference?
The two degrees are very connected, although they are different. A graduate in foreign trade is usually in charge of controlling the management of goods at customs, that is, they control what comes in and what goes out and they are also in charge of logistics. Graduates in foreign trade usually work in ports, airports, etc.
A graduate in international business, for their part, is in charge of coordinating clients, looking for new contacts abroad, seeking to improve relations between the company and clients, as well as between one country and other countries. They are also in charge of opening doors for companies. This second degree is more diplomatic since the work is mainly about meetings with businesspeople, etc.
What is the day to day life of a Foreign Trade specialist like?
A Foreign Trade graduate will be able to carry out:
- Tasks analyzing import costs for products and services, market analysis, sectoral and regional analysis, price analysis and setting, market studies and supply and demand projections in the international market.
- Planning, coordination, execution and control tasks for all activities and tasks in the export and import sector.
- Advising the public sector on the export and import of products and services.
- Conducting studies, analyses, projects and advising the public sector on packaging and packing of export and import products.
A foreign trade graduate is often responsible for overseeing all aspects of a company or government negotiations and trade policies, or just a specific area of business activity. Some become a foreign trade manager for a company that invests in certain types of import, export, or both products or services. For example, the oil industry might employ an expert to secure a foreign market for the oil it produces.
Other companies may be broader in scope, asking business managers to find any import or export product abroad from which they could make a profit. Most major ports and other types of trade centers also employ foreign trade graduates to oversee tariff enforcement or simply to catalog what comes in and goes out for the purpose of conducting official counts.
