—Why study to become a Music Teacher?
—Because of the importance of teaching Music, both at the institutional and extracurricular level. Music education, like art, represents in the education of children and young people a space for artistic expression that allows them to unfold the creativity held back in other subjects. Although these are subjects that demand effort from them, the truth is that they take them with a different freedom and pleasure. In addition, they serve as channels for their emotions, fundamentally during adolescence.
—Why did you choose this degree?
—Precisely for what I was telling you before. I think this discipline is very important, from its purposes to the design of the programs. It did not take me long to choose, I was sure from the first moment. In addition, I had the advantage that the degree could be studied in my city.
—Are there negative aspects to the career of Music Teacher?
—Yes, like everything. In education, when you seek to incorporate innovative tools into the programs, they are always questioned. There is a system that is already established in a certain way and it is difficult for it to adapt to what we intend to convey, although there are always ways to do it. On the other hand, we teachers of subjects related to the artistic expression area are questioned, since it is considered that they do not have the same importance as the “core” ones. And, as in any area of teaching, there is the issue that to reach a salary that is enough for us to live on we must take hours in several schools, therefore we spend all day commuting.
—Besides the education system, can you work in other fields?
—Yes, you can give private lessons, you can teach instruments, you can work with neighborhood groups to promote the formation of bands, murgas and orchestras. There are many fields for applying music teaching, you just have to apply creativity to keep discovering them.
—What would you say to someone who is considering enrolling in this degree?
—Go for it. There is always time to go back and choose something else, but personally I think it is a degree you don't go back to once you are already working in a certain career. The coursework of the Music Teaching degree is very manageable and entertaining, although it has the same demands as any degree.
