Technology and Computing, Design

The degree in Interaction Design for XR focuses on augmented and virtual reality, which are emerging and promising technologies.

User experience design is essential in this growing field.

The educational offering on the market provides skills and XR design competencies, which can open up various professional opportunities.

Some of the common roles include immersive product designer, virtual reality game designer, technical designer, gameplay designer, 3D artist, Virtual Reality environment designer, User interface artist, level designer, XR designer, 3D experience designer, product designer (AR/VR), UI Designer (XR), UX Designer (XR) among others.

In general the programs last for weeks and focus on the theory and practice of designing immersive interactive experiences for RA, RV and MR technologies.

Through hands-on projects, students will learn to design and implement interfaces for various augmented reality platforms.

Basic courses include live sessions, independent study hours, own community, personalized assistance. Students will learn to use industry-recognized tools and techniques, such as Unity, Unreal Engine

The basic curriculum of XR Interaction Design programs covers topics such as interaction design, user experience and prototyping. Students work on projects for their personal portfolio, which will allow them to apply the skills they have learned.

In general these courses require practical work, completing the course and a minimum grade of 70% on the final test.

What is RA, RV and MR?

Augmented Reality (RA):

Augmented Reality is a technology that combines the real world with virtual elements, overlaying digital objects, such as images, videos or information, onto the physical environment. Through devices such as smartphones, tablets or special glasses, users can interact with these virtual elements while still seeing and experiencing the real world.

Virtual Reality (RV):

Virtual Reality is a technology that creates an immersive experience in a completely virtual environment.

Users use display devices, such as RV glasses or headsets, to immerse themselves in a computer-generated simulated world. This technology provides a complete sensory experience, which can include 3D images, sounds, tactile sensations and movements, allowing users to feel that they are present and participating in that virtual environment.

Mixed Reality (MR):

Mixed Reality is a combination of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In Mixed Reality, virtual elements interact with the real world in a more integrated and realistic way. Unlike Augmented Reality, where virtual objects are overlaid onto the real world, in Mixed Reality, virtual objects can interact with and be affected by the physical environment. This is achieved through the use of special display devices, such as Mixed Reality headsets, which allow users to see and manipulate virtual objects as if they were part of the real environment.

Virtual space and world

Augmented Reality combines virtual elements with the real world, Virtual Reality creates a completely virtual and immersive experience, and Mixed Reality combines interactive virtual elements with the physical environment. These technologies have diverse applications in fields such as entertainment, education, design, medicine, and many other areas.

What does an interaction designer for XR do?

An interaction designer for XR (Extended Reality) is responsible for creating immersive and interactive experiences for virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality applications and devices. Their main goal is to design how users interact with and relate to virtual environments.

Some of the tasks and responsibilities an interaction designer for XR may carry out:

Define interaction: The interaction designer defines how users will interact with virtual environments. This includes determining the gestures, movements, and actions users can perform to manipulate virtual objects, navigate environments, and access the application's features.

Create interaction flows: The interaction designer develops interaction flows, which are the sequences of actions and events that occur during an XR experience. This involves designing how users move through the environment, select objects, perform actions, and receive visual or auditory feedback.

Design user interfaces: The XR interaction designer creates the user interfaces that allow users to interact with the virtual environment. This can include elements such as buttons, menus, control panels and other interactive elements that facilitate navigation and manipulation of virtual objects.

Optimize usability: The interaction designer ensures that the XR experience is intuitive and easy to use. This involves conducting usability testing to identify potential interaction issues, iterating on the design and making adjustments to improve the user experience.

Collaborate with other professionals: XR interaction designers often work as part of a team with other professionals, such as user experience (UX) designers, 3D artists and developers. They collaborate closely to ensure that interaction, visual design and technical implementation are effectively integrated.
