How to study design in Mexico

There are design bachelor's degrees at public and private institutions in Ciudad de México, Aguascalientes, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada or Cancún, among other cities. Many require a portfolio or their own exam, in addition to the general admission requirements.

Designing means solving a problem by giving it form: a logo, packaging, a car, a garment, a room. It's not enough for something to look good, it also has to work. Before deciding, look at what projects students in each program make: that's where the focus shows. If it's a private institution, ask for its RVOE number.

How to choose between them

Notice what you do when no one asks you to: whether you edit videos or photos, draw characters or clothes, rearrange your room, build things with your hands, or notice how a page or an app is made.

Then ask yourself where you want to see what you create: on a screen, in an object you can touch, in a space to live in, or in something to wear.

If you're deciding between Industrial Design and Automotive Design, compare what subjects each one includes and which is offered near you: the second specializes in vehicles. The career test can help you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to draw to study design?

In Graphic, Fashion or Animation Design it helps a lot; in Industrial Design materials also carry weight, as does the way an object is used. If they ask for a portfolio, prepare work that shows how you think, not just how you draw.

How long are design degrees in Mexico?

Architecture is the longest in the field; Graphic, Industrial, Fashion and Interior Design have a similar, somewhat shorter duration.

Are there design degrees for people who like cars?

Yes: Automotive Design prepares you to create and carry out vehicle projects. If you prefer something broader, compare it with Industrial Design.

How do I get into a design degree?

Each institution defines its own process. Many use the EXANI-II from Ceneval or their own exam, and in design a portfolio is usually also required.

What if I still don't know which design I like?

Several institutions offer Design as a broad degree. Compare it with more specific ones, like Graphic Design.
