Design
Design is a discipline that combines creativity and technique aimed at developing objects that are both beautiful and functional.
What is design?
Design has become one of the most open and comprehensive careers of modernity. Throughout history, people have always designed: posters, logos for brands, posters, clothing, machinery, furniture; absolutely everything we use was thought up and designed by someone. Recently, design has become a formal field of study, and those who dedicate themselves to studying design end up as professionals with one goal: to invent.
Design is too broad and is therefore divided into various branches: fashion design, graphic design, industrial design, virtual reality design, image and sound design, UX design, interior design; all branches of design are focused on creating pieces that are both functional for humans and aesthetically beautiful.
What do designers do?
The work of designers consists fundamentally of creating. It seems a bit vague, but it is not simple at all: each design professional has an area of expertise and masters the tools needed to create objects with a specific purpose: lighting a home, announcing a concert, keeping warm in winter.
Indeed, an industrial designer designs functional objects that are also decorative; a graphic designer creates graphic pieces (digital or printed) to communicate a specific message effectively; a clothing designer creates clothes that are useful for people and make them look good.
Design is a broad field that encompasses various branches, each of which focuses on specific aspects of creation and problem-solving.
These are some of the most notable branches of design:
Clothing design: It focuses on the creation of garments and accessories, considering aspects such as functionality, aesthetics, materials and fashion trends.
Graphic design: It is dedicated to the creation of visual elements, such as logos, posters, illustrations and graphics, using design principles to communicate messages effectively.
Industrial design: It focuses on the design of manufactured products, from home appliances to automobiles, considering aspects such as ergonomics, mass production and user experience.
Virtual reality design: It specializes in the creation of immersive experiences using virtual reality technologies, such as games, training applications or interactive simulations.
Image and sound design: It focuses on the creation of audiovisual elements, such as sound design, animations, visual effects and post-production, for applications in film, television, video games and other media.
UX Design (User Experience Design): It focuses on improving users' experience when interacting with products, services or systems, ensuring that they are intuitive, accessible and satisfying.
Interior design: It is dedicated to creating functional and aesthetically appealing interior spaces, considering aspects such as layout, lighting, materials, and furniture.
Each branch of design has its own focus and specific objectives, but they all share the goal of creating pieces and solutions that are both functional for people and aesthetically appealing. Design seeks to combine creativity, innovation, and problem-solving to improve people's lives and experiences in different aspects of their environment.
If you're interested in the degree in design, communication, in fashion, you have to read The Psychology of Fashion by Professor Carolyn Mair.
Dr. Carolyn Mair, cognitive psychologist and fashion expert, is a pioneer in studying the relationship between clothing and human behavior. Author of the influential book The Psychology of Fashion (translated into six languages), she combines scientific rigor (PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience) with practical experience as a former professor at London College of Fashion and industry consultant. Her work reveals how fashion transcends the aesthetic to become a language of identity, power, and social connection, while also promoting ethical and sustainable practices in the sector. Mair shows that understanding the psychology behind clothing is key for designers, communicators, and professionals seeking to make an impact on contemporary culture.
