What are the differences between the degrees in accounting and business administration?

Some degrees may present great similarities to each other, and when thinking about them it is sometimes difficult to find the line that separates them, even when choosing which one will meet our work expectations.

In the professional world there are degrees that complement each other and even that have similar subjects in their study plan, which is why it is important to know them from the inside, before starting the coursework.

What differences are there between the accountant and business administration degrees?

To find the difference between both degrees it is very important to be able to understand what the central focus of each one is, what fundamental subjects its study plan includes, what training objectives they have and what functions each professional will later be able to perform.

The Accountant Degree

The accountant degree lasts 4 to 5 years, with a broad study plan that includes subjects ranging from philosophy to economics, for example. Some of the most relevant courses that can be found are related to mathematics, accounting, statistics, administration, economic history, finance, taxes, law and auditing. In some countries private universities may offer an intermediate qualification upon completion of the third-year subjects, which offers the possibility of becoming an accounting analyst and administrator.

In this way, the different courses taken give the professional specific training so that they can acquire technological tools to use when performing their tasks, and stay up to date on the applications and programs used in accounting matters. It also provides mathematical knowledge, practices related to organization, as well as subjects related to the social area.

It is important to take into consideration that the accountant career is in constant updating, since companies may use different applications to carry out their accounting, and over time these programs may undergo changes that must be known. On the other hand, the tax laws of countries or states also keep changing, and even accounting graduates must become familiar with the tax issues affecting international trade, if their organization requires it.

¿Qué diferencias hay entre las carreras de contador y administración de empresa?

The accountant is a fundamental professional in any organization, whether public or private. Even for the smallest matter in which a person must issue an invoice, the advice of an accountant may be required, since in tax matters he is an expert who can evaluate not only costs, but also which laws affect each economic activity and what taxes must be paid for each job. He is also the one who is up to date on the different categories that exist in a country, as well as the regulations that must be taken into account to avoid problems.

Accountants dedicate themselves to understanding the accounting of different organizations to find solid financial bases when making certain decisions. In this sense, he is in charge of preparing reports that can show a thorough analysis of the costs of new projects or investments, for example. He must also develop budgets, balance sheets, in which he must record the money that enters and leaves an organization; that is, the accountant makes an essential contribution to the financial statements of a business structure.

Another of the functions an accountant can perform is to evaluate the reports of a business management, to identify risks and be able to suggest improvements or modifications in any area.

The professional with an accounting degree can work in different areas of a company, or can perform internal as well as external auditing tasks, which are carried out for different institutions and organizations to ensure that the balance sheets presented are correct and do not show anomalies. He can also perform tasks in a bank, for example, in the treasury sector, cashier services or business customer service. Or he can even be part of the public sector, both in an advisory and financial planning position, as well as holding a position as a public official.

Independently, he can advise other companies and create a consultancy that develops financial systems or supports the management of different small, medium or large organizations at the same time.

The business administration degree (Bachelor's Degree)

Regarding the bachelor's degree in administration, we can see that it seeks to train a professional with an organizational profile, where his aptitudes for planning and leading a team or organization will be of great importance. He will also be in charge of developing strategies and methods to assist different areas of a company or organization.

The length of the degree may vary depending on the school chosen, but it usually lasts approximately 4 or 5 years. In the curriculum we can find subjects such as algebra, sociology, statistics, economics, management and costs, among others. Among the courses, two subjects that will be relevant for students stand out: on the one hand, general administration, which provides an introduction to the world of administration, with general knowledge that will later be expanded on in other subjects. Nearing the end of the degree they will find the subject of general management, a course that brings closure to the knowledge acquired throughout the degree.

As for the tasks that an administrator will be able to perform, their ability to influence the structures and processes of an organization in order to make the best decisions stands out. In this sense, in seeking the best result, the graduate in administration will have to plan a methodology in which the resources available to an entity are used as effectively as possible. It is the administrator who will be able to set certain objectives and plan that process to achieve them efficiently. The performance of the graduate in administration will be of great relevance when evaluating the performance of an organization.

The professional has training that allows them to design foreign trade projects and develop business plans. In addition, the graduate in administration must have the necessary knowledge to be able to manage a company both at an economic level and in the management of its human resources. In this way, the administrator can work at different levels of an organization, both in the private sector up to a management position or in the public sector at a governmental level.

Diferencias entre contador y administración de empresas

Regarding the differences between both careers, although their curricula are quite similar, we can see in relation to the functions that each graduate will perform, that the accountant is the one who will be in charge of collecting accounting data, to analyze it, classify it and then prepare the corresponding reports for each area; and the graduate in administration will be the one who takes into account the resources that an organization has, both financial, technological and human, and based on them will carry out planning and a methodology to meet the goals.

In this sense, an accountant seeks to focus on the accounting side of the company, on the balance sheets, on the financial statements related to the commercial sector. On the contrary, an administrator has a more holistic approach to the organization, integrating different sectors such as marketing, finance, and management to develop strategies and optimize the performance of a company or entity.

On the other hand, accounting professionals, while they are a fundamental part of the entire financial area, are just one more piece of a mechanism, whereas the business administration graduate, due to his or her leadership ability, is at the top of an organization, since it is he or she who puts into play his or her technical and human skills to lead and make decisions.

Accountants must take into account the tax laws of the place where they live or for which they work, since their degree is intimately related to the country in which they obtained it. In contrast, business administration graduates can work in any country, regardless of where they studied.

We could say that despite the differences that both careers present, they are also complementary, since the accountant is the one who evaluates the financial resources that an organization has and the administration professional is the one who makes the decision about the use that will be assigned to those resources. Just as the accounting professional may find financial problems in an organization and it will be the administrator who can evaluate, design, and advise to achieve the best planning to fix those failures.

On the other hand, the administrator can prepare accounting documents, but does not have the authority of an accountant to perform audits on those reports or balance sheets.

Both professionals can work independently performing consulting tasks, and in fact they can form an integrated team to respond to organizations that need advice on different points of their structure. They can also dedicate themselves to the area of teaching in the training of new professionals.
