Technology and computing degrees in Colombia

In Colombia you can study degrees in technology and computing ranging from engineering and systems to software development, data, artificial intelligence, robotics and video games.

If you play games and wonder how each level was made, you make small programs for your phone or you're the one they call when something doesn't work, there are programs that build on what you already like to do.

How to study technology and computing in Colombia

In Colombia programs can be technical, technological or professional (university-level), and the SNIES, the official higher education information system of the Ministry of National Education, indicates which type it is and whether it has qualified registration. Two programs with the same title can differ quite a lot in their subjects.

There are options at public and private institutions in Bogotá, Medellín, Envigado, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Manizales or Neiva, among other cities. You learn by building: writing code, testing it, finding the bug and trying again, with hands-on projects and teamwork.

The technology and computing degrees in Colombia

Among those studied in Colombia are Computer Engineering, Software Development, Data Science and Video Game Design.

Tools change fast, so good programs teach foundations that last: thinking in steps, understanding how data is stored and moved, and explaining what you did. Computer Engineering, Software and Robotics overlap with engineering degrees in Colombia; Video Games and User Experience, with design ones.

How to choose between them

Look at what you do in your free time: if you like taking a problem apart until you solve it, if you prefer creating what others will use or discovering what data says, if you are more drawn to games than to apps.

Then think about the type of work you enjoy: programming focused for hours, talking to the person who will use the system to understand what they need, or combining technology with design. Software Engineering does not ask for the same as Information Systems.

If you're torn between Data Science and Video Game Design, think about whether you enjoy finding patterns in information more or building worlds that other people will play. The career test helps you compare that intuition.

Frequently asked questions

How long do technology degrees last in Colombia?

It depends on the program level: a technical or technological program is shorter than a professional one. Among professional degrees, Computer Engineering is usually one of the longest, and Software Development, one of the shortest.

What is the difference between a technical, technological and professional program?

Duration and depth change: the technical program is the shortest and most practical, the technological one adds more fundamentals and the professional one is the complete university degree. The SNIES indicates the level of each one.

What do they consider for admission?

Many institutions look at the Saber 11 results, which are administered by the ICFES. Confirm it on each program's page.

Do I need to be good at math?

It depends on the degree. Data Science or Artificial Intelligence use it quite a lot; Video Game Design or User Experience Design, less so. It helps to reason in an orderly way.

Can I study video games without knowing how to draw?

In many cases yes, because part of the work is technical: programming, game logic, testing.
