Engineering degrees in Colombia
In Colombia you can study classic engineering degrees (civil, industrial, mechanical, electronic, chemical, computer) and other newer ones, like software, artificial intelligence, robotics or energy.
If you spend your time fixing things, building models, programming or wondering how a machine works, there are undergraduate programs that start from that.
How engineering is studied in Colombia
Engineering degrees are university undergraduate programs offered in public and private institutions in Bogotá, MedellÃn, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, Neiva or Yopal, among other cities. At the beginning there is a lot of math and physics, and then each degree moves into its specialty.
Most of the work is practical: laboratories, workshops, internships and group projects. Before applying, check in the SNIES that the program has a qualified registration.
Engineering degrees in Colombia
You can start with Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Civil Engineering.
There are also related degrees, such as Industrial Design or Architecture, which share part of the technical foundation. Software, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics overlap with the technology and computer degrees in Colombia, and Agricultural, Environmental or Forestry with those of agriculture and environment.

How to choose between them
Think about what you do for fun: if you build circuits, if you notice how a house is made, if you are interested in caring for rivers and forests, if you enjoy optimizing or automating something.
If you have trouble deciding between building objects, programming them or caring for the environment, first look at the first-semester subjects in each profile. It is also useful to know what is offered near you and in what modality.
If you are torn between Industrial and Computer Engineering, think about whether organizing processes or building programs attracts you more, and compare the subjects. The career test gives you another reference point.

Frequently asked questions
Is it very difficult to study engineering?
It requires consistency, especially in math and physics at the beginning, which you learn by attending classes and practicing every week.
How long do engineering degrees last in Colombia?
Civil, Chemical, Food and Forestry Engineering, along with Architecture, are among the longest; Occupational Health and Safety, among the shortest, and Software, Robotics or Artificial Intelligence, somewhat shorter than the classic ones.
How do I check that an engineering program is registered?
Look it up in the SNIES, the official higher education information system of the Ministry of National Education.
What test do they ask for to get into engineering?
Each institution sets its own admission process, and many take into account your results in the Saber tests from the ICFES. Some add their own test or interview.
What is the difference between Electronic Engineering and Software Engineering?
Electronic Engineering works with circuits, signals and physical devices; Software Engineering focuses on designing and building programs. They share part of the foundation.
What is the difference between Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering applies technology to the design of objects and how their mechanisms work. Industrial Engineering looks at the whole company: machines, people, products and processes, and how to make everything work better together.
