The Business Administration is a degree for those who want to understand how organizations work and take part in planning their activities. It combines knowledge of management, economics, accounting, finance and marketing, among other areas.

Business Administration: what you study and where to study the degree

In this guide you will learn what a business administrator does, what subjects you can study, what some of its job opportunities are and where to find related degrees in different countries.

What is the Business Administration degree?

It is a program that prepares you to organize resources, coordinate people and processes, analyze information and take part in decision-making within an organization.

Depending on the program and the country, it can lead to a bachelor's or undergraduate degree. Although it is often associated with private companies, its tools also apply to cooperatives, social organizations and public institutions.

For example, managing a company can involve planning how much it needs to produce, organizing its purchases, controlling expenses and reviewing whether it will be able to meet its commitments.

In Spain, a common name for this program is Business Administration and Management. In any case, the name of a degree alone does not prove that two qualifications from different countries are equivalent.

What does a business administrator do?

A person trained in Business Administration can prepare budgets, coordinate activities, analyze results and propose improvements. Their responsibilities depend on the position, the organization and their experience: someone starting as an analyst does not necessarily make the same decisions as someone who manages a department.

Imagine that a store detects frequent product shortages. A person in the administrative area could review sales and purchase records, identify when those shortages occur and propose a tracking system. Afterwards they would have to check whether the measure works and adjust it together with the team.

In some contexts, “manager” can be used as a synonym for administrator. However, the exact meaning depends on the position and the country, since some professional titles have their own requirements.

What do you study in Business Administration?

Plans vary between universities, but they usually include subjects that help understand how organizations work and how decisions are made:

  • Administration and strategy: planning, organization and evaluation of activities.
  • Economics and statistics: analysis of information and of the context in which an organization operates.
  • Accounting: reading accounting information to understand costs, results and financial situation.
  • Financial administration: evaluation of budgets, available resources and financing alternatives.
  • Marketing: study of customers, products, prices and marketing channels.
  • People management: organization of work, team development and personnel-related processes.

If you are especially interested in market and consumer analysis, you can also learn about the Marketing degree. Comparing it with Administration can help you distinguish training focused on marketing from one that covers different areas of the organization.

Another function linked to the degree is commercial administration, which deals with activities related to sales and customer service. It may include order tracking, commercial coordination and results analysis. It does not necessarily constitute an independent degree.

How long does the Business Administration degree last?

The duration depends on the country, the institution, the plan and the modality. It can also vary depending on the number of subjects each student takes and passes per period.

For example, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá (abre en otra pestaña) reports an estimated duration of eight semesters for its daytime program and ten for the evening program. That duration corresponds to its program and should not be applied to all universities.

Areas and degrees related to administration

When comparing options you will find general programs and others focused on a sector. Specialized training may share administrative content, but also incorporate subjects and practices specific to its activity.

Agricultural and rural administration

Rural administration, also called agricultural administration in certain contexts, applies management tools to rural establishments and activities. It can cover budgets, purchasing, work organization and production monitoring.

A rural administrator needs to consider conditions specific to each activity, such as production times and available resources. Their work can complement that of professionals in agronomy, veterinary medicine and other disciplines.

Hotel and tourism administration

Hotel administration deals with organizing lodging services, staff, reservations, purchasing and budgets. A hotel administrator can work in different areas depending on their experience and the responsibilities of the position. If you want to learn more about this sector, you can check the guide on studying Hospitality.

Hospitality and tourism administration also incorporates activities related to travel, destinations and tourism services. To learn more about that field, you can explore the Tourism degree.

As an example of a specific degree, the Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Administration at Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (opens in another tab), in Argentina, includes management of hotel services, gastronomic operations and accounting information for the sector.

If you are looking to study tourism and hotel administration online, check whether the program is an initial degree or a top-up cycle. Universidad Nacional de Quilmes also offers a Hotel Administration top-up cycle (opens in another tab) that requires prior training.

Healthcare administration

The health services administration deals with the organization of resources, processes, and services in institutions in the sector. It can include budgets, administrative coordination, and monitoring the quality of care.

This training alone is not equivalent to a clinical degree. Care-related decisions and practices correspond to licensed professionals according to the regulations of each place.

There are also online options. The Universidad Ean in Colombia (opens in another tab) describes a Health Administration program in an online format. Before enrolling, check the required activities, the costs, and the enrollment conditions.

Financial and banking administration

The financial administration degree studies how an organization's financial resources are planned and used. It includes, among other tasks, preparing budgets, reviewing cash flows, and analyzing investment or financing alternatives.

Banking administration applies management knowledge to the operation of financial institutions and services. If you find a degree with that name, review its courses and the credential it awards: it may have a different focus from a general Business Administration degree.

In Madrid, Administration and Finance at IES Alonso de Avellaneda (opens in another tab) is an Advanced Vocational Training program. It leads to the title of Advanced Technician and must be distinguished from a university degree.

Tax administration

The tax administration degree can refer to the management of tax obligations within an organization or to the work of public agencies responsible for administering taxes. The functions of these agencies are defined by the legislation of each country.

To find out what training is required for a tax administrator, check the specific position or degree. There is no single valid university degree for all functions and jurisdictions.

Logistics, international business and port activity

logistics administration coordinates activities such as supply, storage and distribution. When looking for universities, compare whether they offer a specific degree or a guidance within Administration. You can also learn about the Logistics degree to explore this specialty.

The international business administration studies operations between markets in different countries. For its part, maritime and port administration relates to the management of activities and services in ports and maritime transport. Shipping administration focuses on organizations linked to that transport.

Although these fields share management tools, their tasks, regulations and training requirements may be different.

Consortium administration and people management

The consortium administration includes the management of common affairs of buildings or other properties, according to the regulations of each place. It may include collections, payments, hiring of services and communication with owners. The requirements to practice must be checked in the corresponding jurisdiction.

The expression human administration may appear to refer to the management of people or human talent. In an organization, this area may handle selection, training and coordination of personnel processes, according to the responsibilities of the position.

If you are interested in focusing on working with teams and personnel processes, you can read why study Human Resources and compare that approach with that of Administration.

Does Business Administration have a future?

The degree prepares you for tasks that exist in diverse sectors, but the degree does not guarantee employment or a specific trajectory. Opportunities depend on the country, experience, market conditions and the knowledge required for each position.

Technology also changes some tasks. An artificial intelligence tool can help organize information or prepare a draft report, but its results must be reviewed: it can misinterpret data, leave out context, or produce errors. Before using an organization's information, it is necessary to check the confidentiality and data protection rules.

The 2025 World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report (opens in another tab) presents expectations from employers in different countries about job changes and skills. Its projections are general and cannot guarantee the future of a career or an individual position.

What is the job field for Business Administration?

A graduate can look for opportunities in companies, social organizations, cooperatives, or public agencies. Depending on the position and the training required, they may work in operations, purchasing, finance, human resources, marketing, or planning.

Entry-level positions may include administrative assistance, tracking indicators, or purchasing support. Management positions usually require experience and additional responsibilities. There is also independent work, although its conditions and possibilities depend on each market.

When reviewing a job posting, pay attention to the specific tasks, the experience requested, and the type of contract. The position title does not always explain what decisions the person hired will be able to make.

Are administrator and accountant the same thing?

They are not necessarily the same career. Business administration deals with the organization and management of resources and processes. Accounting focuses, among other functions, on producing, interpreting, and controlling accounting information.

Both areas work together: an administrator may use accounting information to prepare a budget. Reserved tasks, signing reports, and registration requirements depend on the legislation and the degree in each jurisdiction.

If you are comparing both programs, you can review the differences between Public Accounting and Business Administration.

It is also useful to distinguish the business administrator from the database administrator or systems administrator. The latter are technology positions related to data management, infrastructure and computer systems; their responsibilities require specific technical knowledge.

A data administrator may work in organization, quality or information management roles. The exact scope varies by position and does not automatically equal that of a business administrator.

Where to study Business Administration?

When searching for universities you will find general Administration degrees, programs focused on a sector and cycles that require prior higher education. Compare the degree title, subjects, format and admission requirements, as well as the length.

The following examples bring together options from Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Spain. The names and requirements belong to each institution and do not indicate automatic equivalence between degrees from different countries.

Options for studying in Argentina

In Argentina you can find Administration degrees at both public and private universities. When comparing options, keep in mind whether it is an initial degree or a complementation cycle that requires prior higher education.

Universidad Nacional de Quilmes

The Universidad Nacional de Quilmes (opens in another tab) offers a distance-learning Licenciatura en Administración with an expected length of five years. For admission, it states that you must have completed secondary school or the polimodal cycle.

The curriculum includes subjects such as Accounting, Introduction to Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and Business Organization and Administration. It also includes a curricular requirement for reading and understanding technical English, for which the university reports accreditation alternatives and courses.

Although the degree is presented as remote, the published curriculum mentions mandatory in-person sessions in subjects. Before enrolling, check where they take place, how often and whether their conditions suit your location.

The university also offers a top-up cycle for the Bachelor's Degree in Administration (opens in another tab), with a listed duration of two and a half years. It is aimed at people with certain related prior higher education qualifications.

Among the published requirements, related officially recognized tertiary degrees with at least 1,300 clock hours of training are mentioned. The university also considers teachers with certain non-university higher qualifications in related areas.

The duration of this cycle should not be compared directly with that of an initial degree because it requires previous studies. If you only have a secondary school diploma, the institution indicates that you should look into the single-track degree.

Universidad Argentina de la Empresa

The Universidad Argentina de la Empresa, UADE (opens in another tab) offers a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. The institution also lists an option in Costa Argentina, with a planned duration of four years and an intermediate qualification of University Technician in Business Administration after two and a half years.

The intermediate qualification may interest you if you want to earn a credential along the way. To find out which subjects you must pass and what conditions apply, check the study plan for the campus and format you choose. UADE also lists an online option for the degree (opens in another tab).

Before enrolling, check the UADE admission system (opens in another tab), current fees and dates.

If you are interested in that option, ask for information about the available combinations, the required subjects, the additional time and the costs before planning it.

What to compare among private universities

In addition to the curriculum, check the campus, modality, schedules and internships. It is also advisable to check the enrollment fee, tuition, installments and their update conditions. Ask about available scholarships or discounts and the requirements to keep them.

Admission processes may include documentation, evaluations or entrance activities. Confirm with each university what is required in the current call for applications and what happens if you are still finishing high school.

Options for studying in Colombia

Pontificia Universidad Javeriana

The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá (opens in another tab) reports an estimated duration of eight semesters for the daytime schedule and ten for the evening schedule. The program includes internship alternatives linked to companies, innovation, social projects or entrepreneurship.

For first-semester entry, the program page states that the grades from the last three academic years and an interview on motivation and knowledge of the degree are considered. It also indicates that students with outstanding academic performance may receive preferential admission without an interview.

Conditions change for other pathways, such as transfer from another university or internal transfer. If you completed your secondary studies in another country, check with the institution what documentation, validations and exam results apply to your case.

Universidad Ean

The Universidad Ean (opens in another tab) offers its degree in Business Administration in in-person and online modalities. It is an option for comparing how coursework changes when you need to study from another town or combine the program with other activities.

Before choosing the modality, check the calendar, the evaluation method, mandatory meetings and the costs of the current call for applications. Also verify which enrollment requirements apply to new students or to those requesting recognition of previous studies.

An option for studying in Chile

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

In Chile, a degree related to administration is Ingeniería Comercial. At the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (opens in another tab), the program includes a specialization in Business Administration and another in Economics. The first brings together content on marketing, finance, operations, people management and strategy.

The university reports a centralized admission pathway through the Higher Education Access Test, known as PAES, and special admission pathways for certain profiles. In centralized admission, the requirements and weightings must be checked for the application year and the chosen degree.

The institution includes Ingeniería Comercial among the degrees for which it requires the Mathematical Competence 2 test, or M2, in the centralized pathway. You can check the official application requirements (opens in another tab) and confirm the details of the call before taking the test or applying.

Options for studying in Spain

Universidad Complutense de Madrid

The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (opens in another tab) offers an in-person degree in Business Administration and Management lasting four years and 240 ECTS credits.

The degree fact sheet lists specializations in Accounting, Business Management, Finance and Marketing. For admission, it links to the access routes, cut-off grades and weightings. Check the information for your entry year and your access route, as the requirements may be different for those with foreign studies or a prior qualification.

IES Alonso de Avellaneda

The qualification of Técnico Superior en Administración y Finanzas from IES Alonso de Avellaneda (opens in another tab), in the Community of Madrid, is a higher-level vocational training program. The school reports a duration of 2,000 hours, spread over two academic years.

Among the entry routes published by the school are certain prior qualifications and an entrance exam for those who meet the required conditions. Before applying for a place, check the current call for applications: this Vocational Training qualification is different from the university degree in Business Administration and Management.

What admission requirements should you check?

Admission does not work the same at every university. Some require proof of secondary-level education; others weigh tests, grades, or interviews. Top-up programs may also require prior higher education and a minimum number of hours.

To compare two programs, look in each call for applications for:

  • Required education: secondary diploma, baccalaureate, or prior higher education, depending on the program.
  • Entrance assessment: tests, grades, interview, or introductory course, where applicable.
  • Documentation: ID, academic certificates, and requested forms.
  • Studies completed abroad: possible legalizations, apostilles, translations, or recognition procedures.
  • Deadlines and costs: enrollment dates, fees, tuition, and payment terms.
  • Format: schedules, exams, internships, and any in-person activities.

If you are interested in working as a public administrator, also check out the degrees in Public Administration: they focus on managing public institutions and policies and may have different curricula and requirements than Business Administration.

If you are interested in a degree, check its official fact sheet and the admission page for the current call for applications. If any requirement is unclear, ask the institution to confirm in writing which documents and entry route apply to your situation.
