Science degrees in Mexico

Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Nanotechnology, Physics, Mathematics, Actuary, Geology and several more: they are science degrees you can study in Mexico.

If you feel like repeating the science class experiment or you enjoy solving problems until you get them right, there are bachelor's degrees that start from that curiosity.

How sciences are studied in Mexico

There are science bachelor's degrees and engineering degrees at public and private universities across almost the whole country: Ciudad de México, Tijuana, Mexicali, Chihuahua, Aguascalientes, La Paz or Tuxtla Gutiérrez, among others. You progress in stages: what you see in the first semesters is the foundation for what comes later.

Not all of them ask for the same thing: some are similar to engineering degrees, like Chemical Engineering or Nanotechnology, and others are closer to health or business, like Actuary. If you choose a private institution, ask for the program's RVOE number and confirm it with the SEP.

Science degrees in Mexico

In addition to the basic sciences, in Mexico you can study Actuary, Computer Science and Genetics.

Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Genetics study life; Physics, Chemistry and Nanotechnology, matter; Geology and Geography, the Earth; Mathematics, Actuary and Data Science, numbers. If you are interested in applying science to processes, compare with the engineering degrees in Mexico; if you are interested in health, with the health ones.

How to choose between them

Pay attention to what you do when no one asks you to: if you watch videos about animals or about space, if you like understanding why a device fails, if you play around with your favorite team's statistics.

Then ask yourself which part attracts you the most: living things, matter, the Earth or numbers. If you like math but also programs and data, look at Data Science; if you are interested in the planet, compare Geology with Environmental Sciences.

If you're torn between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, compare their subjects: the first studies matter and its transformations, and the second applies that to industrial processes. The career test helps you see which one is closest to what you enjoy.

Frequently asked questions

How long do science degrees last in Mexico?

Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Geology and Computer Science are among the longest; Nanotechnology and Forensics are among the shortest, and most bachelor's degrees fall in the middle.

How do you get into a science bachelor's degree?

Each institution defines its own process. Many require an admission exam, their own or prepared by Ceneval, in addition to the high school certificate. Check the admission announcement.

What does an Actuary study?

They analyze the risks of each situation with mathematics and statistics, and help manage a business model, for example in insurance or finance.

Are there science degrees without math?

Almost all include some math subjects, with different weight: you should feel comfortable with them in Physics, Mathematics or Actuarial Science; in Biological Sciences they carry less weight.

Will I spend a lot of time in a laboratory?

In Biotechnology, Chemistry or Biochemistry, yes; Data Science and Mathematics focus on calculations, and Geology adds field trips.
