Science degrees in Spain

Biology (Biological Sciences), Mathematics, Physics, Biotechnology, Data Science, Chemistry, Genetics, Geology and others: they are science degrees you can study in Spain.

If at school you like lab work, if you wonder how nature works or if you enjoy math problems, there are degrees that build on that interest.

How science is studied in Spain

They are Science branch degrees, at public and private universities in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Granada, Oviedo or Logroño, among other cities. Subjects are studied in order: the subjects in the first years are the foundation for later ones, so keeping up with them helps a lot.

The name of the degree and its guidance change from one university to another: there are degrees focused on the laboratory, others on calculus and models, and others on fieldwork. The official titles are listed in the RUCT.

The science degrees in Spain

Alongside the classic degrees, in Spain you can study Genetics, Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Genetics study life; Physics and Chemistry, matter; Geology and Geography, the Earth; Mathematics and Data Science, numbers. Data Science has a lot in common with the technology and computing degrees in Spain, and Biochemistry or Genetics with health ones.

How to choose between them

Think about what you do in your free time: if you watch documentaries about space or nature, if you like knowing why things happen, if you get hooked on logic puzzles.

Then decide what attracts you most: life, matter, the planet or numbers. If you like data and software, look at Data Science or Mathematics; if you are interested in the environment, compare Geology with Environmental Sciences.

If you are torn between Biotechnology and Biological Sciences, compare the subjects in each profile and the curriculum of the universities you are interested in. The career test can give you a clue about which fits you best.

Frequently asked questions

How long do science degrees last in Spain?

Science degrees are all similar in length, and a double degree adds more years.

Are there science degrees without mathematics?

Almost all include some mathematics subject: in Physics or Mathematics they carry a lot of weight from the first year, and in others they are mainly used as a tool.

What is the difference between Physics and Chemistry?

Physics studies matter, energy and their laws; chemistry, the composition of matter and its transformations. Compare their profiles: Physics and Chemistry.

How do I know if a science degree is official?

Look it up in the Registro de Universidades, Centros y Títulos of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.

What does Biotechnology study?

How to apply science and technology to living organisms to create products and processes, for example in health, food or the environment. It brings together biology, chemistry and engineering.
