How communication is studied in Colombia

In Colombia, Social Communication studies the discourses and media of society as a whole, and it is the broadest entry point into the field. There are public and private options in Medellín, Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Cali or Pereira, among other cities.

The focus varies greatly between institutions: one may lean toward audiovisual work and another toward media or business. In many programs it is common to create your own work, such as a report, a video or a communication plan. Before choosing, verify the program in the SNIES.

How to choose between them

Look at what you do for fun: whether you write texts, whether you edit videos, whether you enjoy moderating a debate or hosting a school event, whether you analyze why an ad works.

Then decide how you want to take part: by reporting, by creating the idea, by producing behind the cameras or by looking after the image of a person or a company. Someone who enjoys organizing and nurturing the relationship with the public may be better suited to Public Relations than to Journalism.

If you cannot decide between Social Communication and Audiovisual Communication, compare their subjects and check which institutions are near you. The career test can guide you on which one is most like you.
