How to choose between them

Notice what you do for fun: whether you write, whether you record and edit, whether you like speaking in front of a group, whether you pay attention to how a brand presents itself.

Then think about what you want to do with that: research and report what happens, create campaigns, look after the relationship between an organization and its audience, or produce audiovisual content. Each option points to a different degree.

If you're torn between Journalism and Public Relations, compare the study plans in each profile and see which institution is closest to you. The career test can give you a clue about where to start.

Frequently asked questions

How long do communication degrees last in Chile?

Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, Audiovisual Communication and Social Communication have a similar length to each other, that of a full university degree.

How do you apply to Journalism?

Many universities use PAES results (Prueba de Acceso a la Educación Superior), administered by DEMRE, and each one defines how much weight to give each test. Check the program requirements.

What is the difference between Journalism and Social Communication?

Journalism focuses on investigating what happens and reporting it. Social Communication analyzes the media and society's discourses from a broader perspective. Compare their curricula in each profile.

Do you have to write really well?

In Journalism, writing is central. In Advertising, Public Relations or Audiovisual Communication you will also write, but creativity, dealing with the public or visuals matter more.

Are there evening or remote options?

It depends on the institution and the degree. Ask whether it offers daytime or evening classes, or online classes, and whether hands-on practice with recording equipment must be in person.

What does a public relations specialist do?

They create and protect the reputation of a company, an institution or a person: they design how it communicates with its audience, and develop actions to maintain that image. Read the Public Relations profile.
