How health is studied in Peru

In Peru the medical degree is called Medicina Humana. Health degrees are offered at public and private universities in Lima, Trujillo, Huancayo, Arequipa, Ica or Puno, among other cities, and start with science courses, such as biology, chemistry and anatomy, before moving on to practice with patients.

Before choosing a university, check that it is licensed with the SUNEDU, the superintendency that oversees university education.

Nursing and Dentistry involve constant contact with patients, which requires patience and attention to detail; Biochemistry and Biotechnology spend more time in the laboratory, and Health Services Administration organizes clinics and hospitals. The laboratory ones overlap with the science degrees in Peru, and Psychology with social sciences and humanities.

How to choose between them

Notice what you do when no one asks you to: if you help a family member with their medicines, if you are amazed by how an organ works in a science class, if you like animals or if you enjoy listening.

Then think about the work pace you like and how long you want to study: Medicina Humana is quite a bit longer than Nursing or Nutrition.

If you are torn between Dentistry and Pharmacy, compare what courses each one has and which one is closer to you. Also take the career test to compare with what you think.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a health university is licensed?

Check with the SUNEDU whether the university is licensed, and check with the institution itself what degrees it offers.

How long are health degrees in Peru?

What is the admission exam for Human Medicine like?

Each university holds its own exam or defines other admission methods, with different dates and openings. Check the admission prospectus of the university you are interested in.
