Engineering degrees in Spain

In Spain there are degrees in Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, Electronic, Aeronautical, Software and Energy Engineering, as well as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and related degrees such as Architecture.

If you like taking things apart and putting them back together, programming, doing technology projects in class or understanding how what surrounds you is built, there are degrees that start from that.

How engineering is studied in Spain

Engineering programs are university degrees taught at engineering schools of public and private universities, in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Valladolid, Santander, Sevilla or Getafe, among other cities. In the first years, mathematics, physics and drawing or programming predominate; specialization comes later, and at the end a final degree project is completed.

The names of the programs, the number of places and the entry grades vary by university. Official engineering degrees are listed in the RUCT, the Registry of Universities, Centres and Degrees.

The engineering degrees in Spain

Among those studied in Spain are Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Industrial Design is studied with similar technical training but with a different focus. Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality overlap with the technology and computing degrees in Spain, and Environmental or Forestry with agriculture and environment ones.

How to choose between them

Notice what you do for fun: whether you build circuits or models, program your own games, or are drawn to buildings or renewable energy.

Also think about how you like to work: with your hands in a workshop, in front of a screen or outdoors supervising a construction site. Each degree combines these three things in different proportions.

If you can, go to the open days at engineering schools: you will see the labs, talk to students and clear up questions about the curriculum. If you are torn between Computing and Industrial, the career test can give you an initial idea.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bachillerato do I need to study engineering?

The most common path is the Science and Technology Baccalaureate, because mathematics and physics carry a lot of weight in the first years; the tracks are listed on the website of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports. Each university sets the subjects that count toward the admission grade; check its website.

How long do engineering degrees last in Spain?

Engineering degrees are similar in length to each other; Architecture takes longer.

What is the difference between Architecture and Civil Engineering?

Architecture focuses on designing buildings and spaces; Civil Engineering works on infrastructure such as bridges, roads or dams.

Can I study engineering if I like the environment?

Yes. Environmental Engineering and Forest Engineering combine science, technology and caring for the environment.

Can I study engineering in another autonomous community?

Yes, many universities accept students from other places, although access and places depend on each one. Check the requirements on their website.

What does Electronic Engineering study?

The design and development of circuits and electronic devices that perform a function: sensors, control systems, communication equipment. It involves a lot of physics and lab work.
